Bubba Miller

It's a report on comments made by Bubba Miller on his radio show that UT's O-Line play is definitely sub-par and that ...
''What lost them the game was that they basically got outmuscled up front. Justin Tuck spent the entire game on the other side of the ball, and Notre Dame consistently beat Tennessee with basic blitzes.''

And furthermore ...
''For years, people feared the Tennessee offensive line and running game,'' Miller said. ''The psychological part is such a huge part of winning the game in the fourth quarter. I understand there were a lot of guys not healthy, but they just don't beat anybody into submission the way Tennessee did years ago.''

Bottom line ...
''There comes a time when you have to walk up to the line of scrimmage, point to where you're going to run and still be able to get it done,'' Miller said. ''It's been a while since I've seen Tennessee be able to do that.''

I believe that UT's O-Line staff needs to go. The question is, given that Phillip Fulmer views himself as the "anti-Majors" (Majors would change COORDINATORS in mid-season, PF generally waits until coaches leave of their own volition) and has been loathe to make changes in his staff over the years, can he find the ruthlessness to make the necessary changes?

read the article and it is real close to the truth, will Fulmer fire coaches to fixit? probably not....but something needs to be done!

Blaming ol' Jimmy Ray Stephens, huh? I might have to agree - I've never been a fan of his and despite having pretty strong talent, this year in particular, our line has definitely been below UT's usual standards for several years. You'd think we'd be just mauling people with the guys we have on the line this season, but it isn't happening - I know we've had some injuries, especially recently, but I think Bubba is right...

I tend to agree. If you look at the rushing numbers (which I am sure allvol can provide) they have really gone downhill in the three years that JRS has been coaching the line.

I don't need stats and figures to tell me that our o-line has been getting whipped. You can see it on the field. I have never been convinced Jimmy Ray Stevens was a good coach, and I'm still not. He is used to a passing offense due to Spurrier, and that is what he coaches. His boys are not physical, they do not work on blowing guys out only on sustaining blocks for a few seconds.

Last season 138.5 rushing yards per game average was the worst since 1996 (125.8 ypg).

The Vols went 10-2 in 1996, including a 20-14 win over Ohio State. However, the total offense for 1996 regular season was 434.5 ypg and the scoring average was 35.4 ppg. In comparison, the Vols finished last season 10-3... losing to Clemson in the Peach Bowl.... total offense was 371.8 ypg.... scoring was 24.2 ppg.

The 1985 (9-1-2) team that beat Miami in the Sugar Bowl only averaged 150.4 rushing ypg during the regular season and 384.8 total ypg, while scoring at 26.4 ppg. That team finished 4th in the final rankings.

This season's team is 7-2, poised to win another Eastern Division Crown, averages 167.7 on the ground (with Vandy and Kentucky upcoming).... total offense 376.8 ypg... scoring 26.3 ppg.

The fact that this team this year is 7-2... 5-1 in the SEC and has a high probability of going to the SECCG with offensive stats in the middle of the SEC... defensive stats in the middle of the SEC... special teams stats near the bottom of the SEC... and is negative in turnover ratio... is amazing. And they could very easily be 8-1 with the same stats! I think its a testament to the coaching staff and a "just win" attitude.

Whoever was the 'actual' offensive coordinator gets the credit. If Cutcliffe hadn't left before the game, then I would give him credit. I still didn't like the fact he left with his job unfinished  ..... No credit for him.

Kind of tough to criticize a coordinator for leaving the way Cutcliffe did. SEC head coaching jobs just don't grow on trees and he had already passed up the Kentucky job.

Not criticizing, just said that I didn't like it. I understand it, I just didn't like it, never will like it, and I thought the timing stunk. If the Vols had lost to Florida State.... I would have laid the blame squarely on Cutcliffe. I don't hold him up on the pedestal that others do... just because they always compare Sanders to him.
