This has been an excellent coaching job by....

Wow you and Vol Dad are neck in neck for most misinformed poster. You do realize that there are 16 coaches every year that make the tournament. I mean you could add a lot more names to your list. Although doing that wouldnt make it anymore relevant because you missed the mark totally. The short list I was refering to were the names of coaches who made it 4 times to the sweet 16 in the past 6 years. And yes, sweet 16 trips are a little unprecedented for us prior to Pearl. So excuse me if I dont jump on your let's bash Pearl in the middle of the second best season in UT basketball history. I love it when people refer to CBP's salary as if we could go out and get someone who could do a better job for the same amount of money. Let me ask you, like I asked Vol Dad. Who would you hire?

Good work trying to lump one of his UW-M Sweet 16's in with his UT tenure.

Considering we are the only school in the country paying a coach $2.5 Mil or above who has never made it past the Sweet 16, there are ample number of coaches who have better results for less money.

All that being said, hopefully after Friday that will change!

It does not matter how many coaches would be available for less money and even do a better job. The only thing that matters in that regard is how many of them wanted the job when it became available. I don't remember any of them lining up and beating down UT's door? The coaching position at UT was considered purgatory at the time. Bruce took the job for a lot less than he is making now and turned it into a top basketball position and turned a cash drain for the athletic program in a cash cow. Its a supply demand market and his services are in demand so I would expect to see more increases soon. Now, if you just want to rate his performance/salary based on elite 8 wins then of course he and 90% of the coaches in the USA fail.

As others will tell you, we could of hired Bill Self.

Bruce has done a great job.

You don't always judge improvement by the stat sheet. I have seen much improvement but then again, I have a clue. It's not always about the stats.

Of course. I know that. I'm showing you though that stats do show some of the equation. Not only do the stats back me up, his play did do. He as always been an effective defender since his Freshman days. Yet as a junior, against a 6-7 starting C, he jacked up 9 three's against a team with two big men. That's Frosh. mistake. His first three years here, he had no post game and made stupid mistakes consistently.

This year, he's been excellent. I have nothing but praise for Chism this year. But to say he drastically improved his first three years is naive.

This is one of those posts that begs a few questions:

1. So, with you're case all laid out there, what is your point? Don't be passive aggressive. State your point clearly with conviction or stop with this line of reasoning that is the definition of pointless. It's the same as a few others, I've seen it time and time again, and it never offers any solution or strategy. And it's also terribly timed given what he's accomplished so far this year. Just sounds like pointless *****ing.

If you look at where that back-and forth started, it started with someone saying Pearl IS Tennessee basketball and is "above" the University of Tennessee" because we had nonexistent tradition before him. That's crap. The furthest we've been is still the same place. Our tradition hasn't changed at all other than "number of Sweet Sixteens," which is a stat that pretty much no school should care about.

2. Do you think the coaches fired that you listed above were unjustly discharged? If they were not, are you implying that Pearl should be?

Some were and some weren't. Pearl shouldn't be fired now; I'd wait and see what he can do with the recruiting class of 2010. (If they get kicked off the team for robbing people and/or doing drugs, it's obviously a trend.) However, if Pearl were to leave, I wouldn't be disappointed, at least not if I had any confidence in Mike Hamilton's coaching evaluations. We could definitely hire better coaches for that much money.

3. Is it requisite for a coach to reach the Elite Eight, the Final Four or win the Sec Championship in his first five years at a school to qualify as a success?

No. Pearl has been successful compared to the Buzz Peterson years. Has he lived up to his contract yet? No. Is he suddenly bigger than our entire basketball history to the point where he IS Tennessee basketball, like Coach K at Duke? Hell no.

4. So, "the same place Jerry Green went" is 3 out of 4 Sweet Sixteens? If it's not exactly the "same" then don't use that word. Same means identical.

The Sweet Sixteen is the same round at the same time every year...it's like the Bills going to 4 straight Super Bowls. Eventually, it's more of an indictment (why the hell haven't they won one yet) than an accomplishment. And actually, what Bruce Pearl has done is more like the Bills going on 4 straight AFC Divisional Playoff trips...but whatever.

5. Do you think Bruce should not have recruited Ramar, Duke, or Tyler?

He definitely had plenty of clues with some, most notably Ramar Smith. Even coaches who take some players of questionable character wouldn't touch him. I think, but don't know for sure, that Crews's situation was somewhat similar. Don't know of any warning signs regarding Tyler Smith.

6. What is the specific barometer of success that Bruce needs to achieve to satisfy you, and stop this constant, oft-regurgitated rambling? Just spell it out, and we'll all discuss it.

Win a Sweet Sixteen game. Or at least, put a team on the floor that gives consistent effort (especially on defense) and knows what it's doing in a halfcourt set. Too many stupid mistakes, defensive lapses and disappearing players (Scotty Hopson) right now.

7. If Bruce made $500,000 less than he does would his work be financially sufficient, so far?

Not really, it would still put him in better company than he deserves...he makes something like twice as much as Coach K right now...but his salary would come closer to matching his actual achievements so far. We need to pay a little more than elite programs do when we want an elite coach, but we paid twice as much as elite programs for a good coach. We can do better than that...

Its very hard to go break into the top 20 in mens basketball if your program resides in the bottom 80. All of the top 10 programs are getting 3 top recruits per year, next 10 at least 2 top recruits per year. That pretty much covers the top 50 players with a few exceptions. Bruce Pearl took a program that could not make the NIT, no top 50 recruits on the roster, little fan support and 5 years turned UT into a top 20 program. He did it with scrappy recruiting, taking the leftovers the top 20 programs passed over, motivating and mentoring them into a group that could compete at this level. At the same time, he almost went door to door to sell his product, filled the area and captivated the Volunteer fanbase. You can mention other top coaches who may have better skills but I doubt any of them would have wanted this job, too much work! So, level 1 has been achieved and it looks like the UT program will now be able to recruit 2 or 3 guys from the top 50 recruits from this point forward and finally compete equally with other top 20 programs. I can't wait to see how level 2 plays out over the next 5 years. How Bruce Pearl and this team performs in the next game is meaningless to me. Win or lose we have arrived.

You took the words right out of my mouth. AMEN!
