I have a couple of free southwest tickets and was thinking about going to louisville or savannah this summer (like july). with louisville i was thinking we could do churchill downs and do the whiskey tour. savannah i guess because it's pretty? i've been to memphis and knoxsville, but that is pretty much it. anyone have any advice? I'm open to all sorts of options. we're thinking like a 4 or 5 day trip. I actually like hot and humid weather, but if it's going to be unbearable i might rethink things.

If something like Savannah is what you're after, strongly consider Charleston.

Bottom line, it all depends on what you're looking for. Fly into Charleston or Hilton Head, rent a car and road trip to a couple of the others for a couple days.

If I was choosing between Louisville and Savannah it would be hands down Savannah. It is a pretty place, close to the ocean, plenty to see/do. The entire town has a atmosphere that is unlike anything else. Charleston, SC is also much like Savannah. I have been their 2 times for vacation. If you end up doing Louisville, I would consider taking the trip down to Lynchburg, TN to the Jack Daniel facility. It is pretty darn neat.

what we are looking for is some history / attractions and excuses to booze and relax. neither of us really golf. I love the ocean though, but that doesn't have to be a high priority.

I suggest Hilton Head. Great relaxed atmosphere, great food and bars.
Then day trip to Charleston one day and Savannah another day.

that would be a solid week. Some of the best tennis in the land as well in Hilton Head.

I second/third/whatever the reccomendation on limiting your time in Savannah. My reccomendation would be to fly into Jacksonville (assuming Southwest does nto fly to Savannah) and rent a car. Spend maybe two days and one night in Savannah looking at the historical stuff and eating at Paula Dean's or some similar place. Then I'd head back towards Jacksonville and spend the remainder of your time in the Jeckyll Island/Brunswick/Sea Island vicinity (it's all close together). If you are just a history nut then you could concievably do a trip out of Jacksonville that includes Savannah, Charleston and St. Augustine as an alternative.

Sea Island area is a very good call. If you have the coin (pronounced kwan), the Cloister is one of the most fabulous places on the entire planet. A week there and you damn well might move.

too many Yankees in Hilton Head. Being in Harbor Town at the height of the season is like Times Square with sand in your shoes and a sunburn. To each his own.

but the golf is top shelf. There aren't many spots anywhere with as many absolutely top flight golf courses. Even the also rans like Colleton River are pretty good tracks.

There are some nice courses there, no doubt. I've slacked off on my game the past few years in order to pursue other hobbies and I forget that people do plan vacations around golf.

i have a trip planned in September to Hilton Head for a wedding. looking forward to playing some nice courses, as opposed to the goat farms around here i frequent. i would love to play Harbor Town, but i don't think anybody else is willing to spend that much.

it's hard to go wrong with Hilton Head/Savannah/Charleston.

Don't completely dismiss the idea of playing Harbor Town without checking the rates first. They have recently discounted the rates in the afternoon. It's still expensive, but it's not $200+ like it used to be.

There are a ton of other places that you'd enjoy for a lot less though.

Agreed. I love the Hilton Head/Savannah area.

I have been the past four summers and I am kinda bummed that I'm not going back this year.

Just got back from Grove Park Inn in Ashville, NC. You could putt off their fairways. Very forgivable course. Greens were in great shape, and the views were incredible.
