This is a list of things that make a huge difference in close games, and that have happened far too often for us. Some are coaching, some are execution, some are just dumb bad luck, but if we can avoid these mistakes, we have a much better chance. Look forward to seeing your thoughts as well, but here are mine:
  • False start / delay of game / any other pre-snap penalty with 1st and goal at the 1, killing a scoring opportunity
  • Illegal Formation penalty on a punt
  • Shotgun snap that hits the ground halfway back to the QB
  • Returning a kickoff fielded inside the 5 and only making it to the 20 when a fair catch would have gotten us to the 25
  • Fumble through the endzone resulting in a touchback the other way (IMO the most punishing, demoralizing rule in the game)
  • Any play that should be a good play for us but somehow turns into a good play for AU (see strip-sack-touchdown from UGA game as an example)
  • A big play negated by a penalty that had no real impact on the play (unnecessary hold, block in the back, etc.)
  • AU getting 5 extra yards in a scrum while our players just go along for the ride
  • Shotgun formation on 3rd and inches
  • Missed opportunity to get a replay overturned because AU gets the next snap off
  • Giving up a 3rd and 15+ conversion on a draw play or similar play where AU has basically conceded the punt but we just botch it
I'll be checking these off as they happen, and unfortunately the more we get, the less likely we are to compete, much less win.

False starts at anytime. This is an indicator of an undisciplined team.

I dont mind the return attempts asthat gives us a chance for a big play. Conceding 3-5 yards for an opportunity to shift momentum is something I feel like is a worthwhile risk.

I'm guessing we see a variation of 6 of the 11

Good thread. Here’s some things I’ll be looking for.

1. Can anyone on our OL create a lane? It isn’t enough to put a hat on a hat. Good OLs move people. The Texas OL turned the corner in 2nd half of USC game. When will the Vols?

2. Can our RBs see the openings that are there and hit it hard rather than bounce outside?

3. Can Helton call another good game? Think he did well against UGA.

4. Auburn’s OL isn’t good. Can Pruitt dial up some timely blitzes to create 3rd & longs AND turnovers? If yes then I think we’ve got a chance to win a low scoring game

The two main ones for me is rbs missing the crease inside and trying to bounce it outside, and blockers completely missing blocks. Both of these are mental and both need to be corrected ASAP.
Agree about blocks. But there are a whole lot of times when pure instinct "tells" a good runner how to react. The really good backs don't have to be taught how to run. Which arm to carry the ball on, when to go out of bounds where a play is designed to go, these are a few things he can be taught. But not how to "run" the ball. I most cases that's god given.

Interesting thing about this list is that it doesn't involve, Chandler breaking a long run, or interceptions or OL blocking better. I agree that if we eliminate these mental errors by players and coaches (can't do anything about just plain bad luck), we're going to exponentially increase our opportunity to win.

This list is harder than OP list. If we can do the first list and do 1-4, we've got a real good shot at winning. That word "IF"... alot of them...

Answer to No.1
This line can not "turn the corner" Just not capable. (maybe not taught enough over their career, I don't know)
No. 2
I feel backs see the hole such as it is. I also think they see the back side of a defense closing in. (mainly Lb's) and instinct redirects them from the "lane". Maybe they need to be more hardheaded and hit the lane, good things can happen. To have a guy that hits the hole most every time regardless of what he sees, takes a guy that has shown this trait from his early days in the game on.
No. 3
Yes, Either he called a really good game or.... Ga. may not be as good as everyone thinks,, or did they not play with the intensity they would against the Bamas, LSUs, ect.
No. 4
Yes, Pruitt can dial up anything on defense that the best coaches in the business can. (that's saying he is among the best) Now, can the players execute what he calls up? that's another story.

The 2 main ones for me:
1 Unnecessary penalties. They kill any momentum we might have. False starts and personal fouls are the worst.

2 Returning a kick anywhere from 10 yards in. We don’t have anyone fast enough to get past the 25 from the 10, let alone from the end zone. Take the ball at the 25 and start the drive. Punting from deep in our part of the field gives the other team good starting field position and an easy scoring opportunity, something we can’t afford to give up.

We have to minimize mistakes. Every game we have lost we’ve lost is due to dumb things.Procedures, missed blocking assignments, turnovers. We clean that up this a 4 quarter game.

If we play like what we've been playing like, I want to see a bench clearing fight that makes it's way into the stands. Coaches, band members, cheer leaders, refs, Even Smokey biting some Auburn fans.

In order for us to win, we need to be mistake free. We don't have enough talent to,go head to head with other teams, This is why Pruitt gets angry when we make mistakes. Each mistake lessens our chance of a win

Have to keep this updated, but luckily we overcame that formation penalty that negated a big play, still have to track it though.

Thought I would add no continuously trying to run up the middle and failure to capitalize on Auburn mistakes, but too late for that.
