Sometimes when I think for very long about the big-money being openly and legally paid to players for their services now, I always end up recalling how when Pat found out that one of the university staffers who manned the athletes’ training table (daily food line) was giving the ultra thin Michelle Snow extra mashed potatoes, she ended up self-reporting the program for having received extra benefits.

Michelle didn’t/couldn’t have a job and had no money to buy food for herself, and the staffer was just trying to help a hungry kid out by giving her enough food to fill that frame. But extra mashed potatoes was illegal by NCAA rules.

My goodness. Can you imagine some of the conversations the “old heads” have now when they get together and discuss what it was like for them compared to how the athletes have it today?

https://www.espn.com/college-footba...tect-college-sports-act-truths-myths-congress

ESPN article about the hard cap 48 million
if Congress passes the same college sports act
This article is poorly reasoned and poorly written. It mixes NIL payments with the actual direct payments of schools to athletes and makes claims about the payrolls of big schools and them "not following the House Settlement." No named sources are given for these assertions. It then goes on to say the new law might work, might not, and teams might find "new loopholes." (Reminds me of politicians criticizing companies for using "tax loopholes" when what they mean is the specific deductions they authorized by law.) Then there's a paragraph vaugely referencing schools' "creative ways to spend money on things" that give them an edge in recruiting and a note that the new law "makes no effort to tamp down those costs or dissuade schools from continuing to spend beyond their means." What? Schools are going in debt or going bankrupt to fund college sports? Really? Since when?

It then raises concerns about reduced opportunities in non-revenue and Olympic sports which have historically been supported by the surpluses generated by the big revenue sports before acknowledging that this hasn't actually happened. Instead, since 2021 when NIL started. This is according to a report by Sen. Cantwell (D), one of the sponsors. The article does not address whether that report should be considered reliable.

I've got a journalism degree from UT and a law degree from an ACC school. I'm more ashamed of journalists than lawyers.

Mudcat. You @‘d me so I’ll reply out of respect. I’m somewhat interested in the issue of NIL spending, how it affects roster composition across all sports and what Congress is seeking to do to correct the obvious upwardly spiraling costs.

What I am not interested in is seeking to decipher long strings of Mudcat. TLDR would only start to be appropriate.

One of my keys to enjoying VolNation is to keep it simple. I’m stupid like that. 🤙🏼😉

No chance that list is accurate, right? It has Grant Hurst as the 3rd highest valued men's basketball player at something like $1.65 million. In case people don't follow basketball, Grant Hurst's on-court contributions weren't worth $165.00, let alone $1.65 mil (8 garbage time points in 3 seasons). No offense to Grant Hurst.
