Although we are improved from last year, right now we are an "everyone else" in terms of total talent level on the team.

We might beat top 5 every now and then in the near future, but at our present overall talent and depth level, a consistent solid competition against these teams is just likely not going to happen.

In their up-and-coming years, Clemson did some good things with 10-15th ranked talent, and it eventually resulted in graduating to their current high recruiting levels.
At #4 in composite talent, they are still somewhat overachieving (via a solid and stable coaching staff and a great QB) compared to the talent for #1-3 teams.

On the other hand Texas is puking with 49 four-stars on their team (with a head coach that many of us wanted).

Gotta have a good/great coach, a really good QB, and great overall talent and depth. We just aint there yet with all three.

Let's hope for some solid signature wins this year and next that result in a bigger upswing in recruiting.

The deal with Clemson was they were in the ACC which is much weaker than the SEC. At the time of their climb, FSU was pretty good and sometimes Miami. Had they played in our conference, they might not have climbed as quickly. You are right about their coaches. IMO, they are very good, and is the reason they are where they are.

Holy mother of moses..........we only have 5 5-stars??? Versus 16 and 12 with Georgia and Bama respectively??? I know we shouldnt star watch but thats suprising......I knew our recruiting was down compared to theirs and we still have a lot of Butch hold overs, but I didnt realize it was that low.

Same with 4-stars 50's vs 31

So far Clemson is the only team I've seen as dominant. Georgia looked like boiled crap against Arkansas and was losing to us at halftime. Alabama has yet to play defense, I expect Georgia to be able to keep them from just outscoring them. We haven't even seen OSU yet. In short, there is not as much separation in that top 4 as it appears.

They were also losing to us at the half.

This can’t be correct. Everyone said we had the same roster as UGA. With that snide comment out of the way, this certainly doesn’t tell the whole story. Player development is just as big as recruiting.

Having high quality talent and depth is one of the key ingredients into winning not only the first half, but also the second half against top tier teams.

A lot of crappy teams hold their own against good teams in the first half, only to fall apart in the 2nd. I'm not saying that we are crappy. We are a decent team, but we don't have enough talent and depth yet to compete consistently in both halves against top tier teams, over and over again. But we are closing in to that position.

I used to not be a fan of expanding the playoff but I am reconsidering now that the pool for the 4 teams is made up of same 5-6 teams every year. If your not AL, Clemson, OState, OK, GA or the one time great season team like LSU then you really have no chance to make the playoffs.

I keep coming back to this. Too many on this board want to blame one player or position group and that's just lazy. I knew after the first half that UGA was going to come back just because of the amount of time our Defense was on the field. You have to have talented depth to overcome and the talent gap was what stood out above everything in the UGA game. Georgia just has far more superior players that they can swap in and out. UT does not have that luxury. What is good to see was that we outplayed them first half. We at least got to see that we could hang with the big boys for at least a half. Jason Swain mentioned this in his podcast as being the single biggest reason we got squashed second half. The talent gap is still too big and the only remedy is recruiting.

The talent gap really showed when our offense took the field against their defense. I don't know of a single offensive unit that outplayed any of their defensive units. Their DB's made most of our wide receivers look like kids. Their Dline mauled our Oline and RBs. Their is only so much you can do as a coach when your chess pieces can't compete with the other guys' chess pieces.

This is a really interesting list to look at. There are 15 teams here and 75 5* players. If spread evenly, every team would have 5 or so 5* players. That’s not the case, 32 of those 75 went to one of 4 teams, that’s nearly half.

We are definitely living in a “Rich get richer” time of college football. It didn’t used to be this way, national champs were way more spread out because top recruits didn’t all want to play for the same school. Usually the top recruits in a state wanted to play for the state school.

It’s going to get to a point where the majority of the NFL is made up of a handful of college teams. It already feels like every NFL team has 1-2 Bama players starting. That will further increase the rich getting richer. It’s probably not good for CFB.

I think we have a better than good shot at beating 4 teams with better talent (per this ranking) than we have ... AU, A&M, FL and we already beat USCjr -- we don't play LSU but I think we could beat them as well this year (ok, FL might be our kryptonite but still)

I agree that we have a better that good shot at beating AU, A&M and FL. However, they are "everyone else" like us, with some minor differences.

My main point in the thread was competing consistently against the top 4 in talent rankings; roughly the same group that winds up ends up in the playoffs year after year, with a an exception from time to time.

UGA should never miss the playoffs and should win a Natty every other year. The recruiting in that state is absurd and UGA is taking everyone they want.

Until something happens and we can start poaching top talent fro Georgia and Florida, we will not be elite. We can be very good (think Oklahoma or Michigan) but not elite (Bama, Clemson)
