UCLA Plans to Play Football Opener Despite Fires

By GREG BEACHAM

LOS ANGELES (AP) -UCLA plans to play its football season opener while monitoring the wildfires in the Los Angeles hills above the Rose Bowl.

UCLA will host San Diego State on Saturday afternoon at the venerable stadium, which is less than 10 miles south of the fires currently burning in the Angeles National Forest. UCLA is in contact with Pasadena officials about air conditions in the area, but still plans to play, coach Rick Neuheisel said Monday at his weekly news conference.

"We're going to leave that to the experts, the people in Pasadena and the people fighting the fire," Neuheisel said. "We just wish them all the best and send out our best to the families and the people who are fighting it."

Smoke has created unhealthy air quality throughout the Los Angeles area, making strenuous physical activity inadvisable for some people. Yet conditions could change during the week as the fires are contained, and the Bruins are keeping an eye on the situation with help from fire officials.

UCLA will go after its fifth consecutive season-opening victory when the Bruins face the Aztecs. Quarterback Kevin Prince will make his debut for the Bruins after redshirting last season, but Neuheisel said tailback Christian Ramirez won't play with a sprained ankle that could keep him out until October.

Neuheisel seems pleased with the Bruins' progress through training camp, though several minor injuries have slowed them. Receiver Gavin Ketchum is out for Saturday with a hamstring injury, preventing him from playing against his younger brother, Logan, a linebacker for San Diego State.

Although the Aztecs went 2-10 last season and have never beaten the Bruins in 21 meetings, Neuheisel won't acknowledge any confidence heading into a three-game stretch of nonconference contests. UCLA visits rebuilding Tennessee next week before hosting Kansas State on Sept. 19.

"We certainly aren't in position after the season we had to take anybody lightly," said Neuheisel, whose first team at his alma mater went 4-8 last fall.

After Monday's practice, Neuheisel pronounced himself pleased with the defense's progress under new coordinator Chuck Bullough. With seven returning starters including cornerback Alterraun Verner and linebacker Reggie Carter, Neuheisel believes his defense's talent will override any problems with the transition.

"The language is kind of the same," Neuheisel said. "Our schemes are similar if not exactly the same. The key is to remain healthy. We do not have a real good amount of depth."

The Bruins had the Pac-10's worst rushing offense last season, but Neuheisel has said he's committed to re-establishing a ground game behind the rebuilt offensive line that struggled so much last year. Ramirez's sprained ankle, which occurred during a recent scrimmage, knocks him off the top of the depth chart for now.

Ramirez is returning to the Bruins after missing last season with academic woes, but Neuheisel is hopeful he won't be out more than two games. His absence puts a spotlight on freshman Johnathan Franklin and sophomore Derrick Coleman, currently the best of several ball-carriers on the roster.

"We've got so many good running backs that anybody who gets on the field should be able to contribute," Coleman said recently. "It's crazy how much talent we have at our position. We didn't run the ball that well last year, but that's going to change."

So you all hope that the SDSU-UCLA is postponed so UT will have more of an advantage, right? Do you realize that if the SDSU-UCLA game IS postponed it will be because the fires situation has not improved or has gotten worse which in turn means that real people and real property will continue to be in danger. You don't really want that, do you? Do you?

Actually, that's not completely true. They might not be able to play because of the air right now as is. They don't want people running around inhaling the crap in the air.

What they been doing for 40 years? Seriously-- All that running back depth for UCLA won't mean squat when Williams and Williams, Montori, Walker, and Berry come bustin through the line. Bet the Bruins go home with a little less depth at RB (Imagine Berry shot on Knowshon).

OMG! Say it ain't so!! Unhealthy air quality throughout the L.A. area??

Not to make fun of the people suffering through the wildfires, but I found that statement amusing.

Personally, I hope UCLA proceeds as scheduled. I don't want any excuses.

this is the worst air quality i can ever remember in LA. i went for a run yesterday on the westside and thought i was going to die (and most of it wasn't because i am out of shape).

Bwaha. You're right, what was I thinking? The air is green so they probably shouldn't be inhaling what's in the air anyways.

I Believe I would wear a respirator---I mean running in that air--------more harm than good. Might look a little weird, but WTH?

I don't really care if you play SDSU, Florida, McNeese State, or have your first week smoked out. Regardless, you're going to get mollywhopped when your boys show up at Neyland Stadium.

Kiffin will let you in when he says its time to let you in, not a minute sooner. He'll have you wishing you never showed up in the first place. And you better pray you brought your depends, because you're liable to shat your pants in fear when you walk inside Neyland. This hell will be so harsh, you will be wishing you had let us beat you last year.

Your children are going to feel the wrath put upon you like Knowshon when his mainframe got disintegrated in one fell swoop from Eric Berry.

If you don't enjoy whiskey before you get to knoxville, you damned well are going to need it to numb the pain from this one.

It's football time in Tennessee.

If you don't know, you will soon.

..."don't sugarcoat it " tell us how you really feel.

GO VOLS (for those that don't remember or those not as old as I, please see Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid).

LOL.probably a good idea, but I had my fill of that in Recon!!(although that was a gas mask) It's usually not that bad, but I should have known better this time of year in the inland empire. Did the beach (down in La Jolla) the next day and that purged it!!! If my kids were already raised, I could definately live there!!

Careful? You act like I wasn't at the Rose Bowl, in the end zone seats, watching that game. This is not the 2008 football team, and this is not the Left coast.

This team is hungry, this team is out for blood, and a tempered attitude is not going to win us a football game this fall. Go back, watch the Cal game from 06, and don't think for a minute that neyland's atmosphere won't be the same for this game.

That attitude left with Phil, respectfully.

ATTACK ATTACK ATTACK, ALWAYS ATTACK

First of all I didn't direct my comments at you or your "loyalty" by being in attendance. Relax....geez.

Take in account what the outcome was last year and our returning talent this year, a new staff, a new system and a new philosophy all together...there will be some "growing" pains that this team and fanbase will have to endure. From reading your post though, you make it seem like UCLA has no point being on the same field as UT and the VOLS are going to score 50+ on the bruins. Tennessee didn't schedule Charleston Southern for their opener this year.

UCLA has issues, but they have improved since last year. Same goes with UT.

This is a fairly evenly matched game whether you want to see it that way or not.

Last year's team should have been up by three TDs at the half... abandoning the run when it was netting us over 5 YPC did us in.

We outgained UCLA by nearly 100 yards, and limited them to under a yard per carry.

If we're able to force Kevin Prince into attempting to win the game with his arm, it will be a long day for UCLA... particularly with 4 new starters on the line.

I understand you may be attempting to temper your expectations, but being pessimistic and being rational are not the same thing... despite what many people seem to believe.

On a side note, for those who blame Arian Foster for that game... the guy had 57 yards rushing on the first 4 plays of the drive where he fumbled near the goal line.

i might feel bad for them if they actually played at or within walking distance of their campus. that would suck as a student to have to take buses to anaheim from the beverly hills area.

Well, rescheduling last year's game wasn't in our best competitive interest, but we still did it for TV.

I didn't realize this: SDSU is without a doubt playing their biggest game of the year (UCLA) on Saturday, but Bray is flying 3000 miles to see UT play? I like our chances to get him

His season starts the following weekend so this is his only chance to come to Tennessee without having to jump through hoops to visit. He can check out a San Diego State game any time. My high school would play games friday night and they wouldn't get over til 11pm. That means he probably wouldn't get to the airport until midnight or later assuming they play games fairly late on friday. Then he'd probably want to get back at a reasonable time on sunday because he has school the following day. I guess he could just skip a day but at the school I went to, you couldn't practice or play in games if you weren't in school that day.
