Fill in the blank, Vols will be better than expected if ____.

Here's mine:
if, Dormady or JG takes full command in fall practice, Tuttle's recovery improves dramatically over the summer, Chandler is a reliable number 2 RB, and Wiggins solidifies a vastly improved backfield.

The Vols will be better than expected IF in every facet and play of the game they are physical and fast. Team 120 played most of their season on their heels and were often physically whooped. THAT part had nothing to do with injuries, watch early in the season App State game in the trenches for example.

Stay healthy for the most part

And the corners and safeties improve - look for the ball and make plays.

Not worried about the offense at all

If Shoop gets anywhere near the hype and we can slow down the offensive slaughters we faced last season

Appy State was losing in the trenches and used a strategy of faking an injury on practically every play in the second half as a bush league response. If they would have lined up and played instead of lying down it wouldn't have been close.

If triple H comes to play with them. Lol. Stay humble, hungry, and healthy and 9-3 won't be impossible. I feel like the only sure loss is to the grumps.

Back in lurker mode I go✌

Obviously if we have a QB that we all hope we do.

IMO, the strength and conditioning will hopefully be a significant improvement. I just believe that the focus and commitment of S&C go a long way on the mentality side and obviously the physical side. If we have less injuries and more focus, everyone should be playing at the best of their ability. If the coaches are coaching to the best of their abilities, we will be better than expected. If not, it should be clear to everyone what the problem is.

I could give a long list, but will keep it short...we get some play makers on offense, the OL plays like it should, and the defense is much improved. IMHO, we need all of these to happen to be better than expected.

Good points. I was just focusing on Jimmys and Joes, but you are correct on all points.

If injuries don't pile up in one critical position group, like they did with the DL last year. And if we don't have any more star players who turn into drama queens. I still think the whole Hurd situation added an emotional negative to a team already dealing with too many physical negatives.

if ... Butch Jones will coach like he did in 2009 (8-0 / 11-2) -- it's the only logical conclusion, seeing as how these are all Butch's players and defense wins games and Butch has had 4 years hc experience in SEC play.

I don't see any reason this team can't put up points so can a Schoop defense stop anybody is the key to the season.

We got a lot of hype with Hurd and Kamara at RB but Kelly actually ran better when he got his opportunity. I think the backups will be fine just need their chance.
I don't see any drop off at WR think the guys we have will do just fine and the possibility they will be better coached. Offensive line should be better. We should be able to score.
I worry about the secondary and linebacker hasn't played well in some games last season. DT should be strong so we'll see if Taylor and Kongbo can even come close to what we got at defensive end from Barnett and crew.
Kicking should not be worse even though we saw a shank of a short field goal in the Orange White game hopefully just a fluke.
I am depending on the coaching being better at every position.

Not to start a Dobbs debate, but some facets of the offense will open up.

they score more points than their opponents. This greatly increases your chances of victory. Just in case you didn't know that.
