The Vandy Loss Sucks, but Let's Take a Look at Reality ...

I don’t wanna lose him but he’s paid too well for his level of consistency. I sure don’t give him more $ or sit RaJa & Smith next year while he drops passes.

Just me but I don’t think he has WR hands for the next level.
There's a reason a lot of teams wanted him as a safety. We won him over with money and by putting him at WR.

If our defense issues stems from having younger players , what's to keep them here and not jumping in the portal after they've had a season of experience ? Maybe the approach should be try and find older veterans in the portal /pay them $$ vs the old formula of recruiting freshmen and hoping they stay around for 3 or 4 years ?

Correct and that results in Coaches getting fired at the University of Tennessee.

2019 and 2020 - Bye bye Pruitt
2018 - Pruitt's First year off the at the time literal worst year UT has ever had. He got a pass
2016 and 2017 - Bye Bye Butch Jones
2013 - Butch's First year. Was given a pass
2012 - Bye Bye Derek Dooley

Before that, 2005 which was Fulmer's worst year to date. Before that. I was a Sophomore in High School before I knew what a loss to Vandy was. The expectation should be to beat Vandy. This wasn't the first time Tennessee's beaten Florida either but I guarentee you the Florida fans see us running them out of the swamp as apocalyptic as we should see vandy running us out of neyland.
The expectation should always be to beat Vandy, but only 2 of those aforementioned Vandy teams was any good (2012 and 2013) and none of them were as good as this year's team. This year's Vandy team is their best team in over 100 years.

Pruitt's 2018 loss to them was particularly atrocious even thought it was Year 1. We beat them in 2020.

Reality: Tennessee is not an elite program in its current state, will never be elite on its current trajectory, and it has been that way for the better part of 2 decades.

The sooner you all understand this, the easier life becomes.
Yep. We have a good program currently with a fanbase that expects it to be elite and contend for titles. We've been stuck in a 20-something year spin cycle of hope for the next year that never really comes to fruition. They need to spend more to get out of it, in addition to some staff upgrades, and I'm losing hope that that's going to happen anytime soon. At least we're better than we were under the previous coaches.

This year’s schedule wasn’t harder than anticipated. We just lost games by finding new ways to lose. Missed big opportunities when we had them.

Yes, lots of reason why we were going to be a bit “down,” but mostly just excuses. Winning programs aren’t satisfied with fumbling away the big chances.

I don’t think the sky is falling - However, there isn’t much reason to feel good about this season. The guys need to get mad and the coaches need to be better.

Either way, we all agree: GO VOLS!

Those type of posts aren't even worth responding to. They are troll posts to bash players by asking loaded questions. Matthews is a very talented sophomore. What happens to him is out of our control but we shouldn't want to start an avalanche of conversation created by a reddit or X type poster.
Lol so if someone gets paid a lot of $ and doesn’t perform they shouldn’t be held accountable? If you happen to run a company, are you hiring ?

Regardless, that’s about as dumb a comparison as I’ve heard on here.
The comment was like “losing to Vandy was the first step to failure”. I posted Majors won 3 SEC championships after losing to Vandy. Then remembered Dickey won 2 after losing his first year. I think it’s stupid to draw assumptions based on Jones, Dooley & Pruitt but that’s as far back as some go.

I didn’t think you knew **** about it. Talk about ignorance! You win the prize my friend.

If the defense had been completely healthy and stayed that way for the season, what might the final record have been under Banks? I would say 9-3 or maybe 10-2.

Ole Miss returned 2 starters . Every team has injuries. Not every team has a read/wait/decipher/react bend and still break scheme.
Yep, op makes some good points, but we've seen/heard it all before. Truth is, we've got to stack depth and reload every year like the GAS, Bamas, and Ohio State's of the cfb world. Even still, this defense needs restructured regardless!

Tennessee had an incredible light schedule in 2025 that will not repeat in 2026 or 2027 from all accounts. we lose an experienced QB and unless we plan on raiding the portal we will most likely lose a minimum of 4 games in 2026 regardless of if we "fix the defense" whatever the hell that means. and then next year instead of blaming the defense people will fip flop and blame not having a QB with experience. this will never end.

you have to be excellent in the face of whatever adversity you face. otherwise you'll always be caught making excuses for not winning because everything was not exactly perfect.

you should be able to win when everything isn't exactly perfect. that's called coaching.
