CBJ and the staff pulled a great class, especially considering the short time they had to do it. People are becoming critics though and acting like they did absolutely nothing. Complaints about not really picking up any linebackers is what I keep hearing. Tennessee has linebackers that were injured last year and didn't get to play a down. Now that Sal dumbseri is gone to the Noles, and Tennessee has a breath of fresh air, I promise everything is going to be okay.

This team is going to be a lot stronger than people think and will surprise some teams. An 8 win season is coming and the development of these new recruits is going to be great. Dobbs and Ferguson could be a great two headed monster in the future, if the staff feels a two qb system would be good. Tennessee is going to be special and get there faster than all the doubters think.

GO BIG ORANGE!!!!

Keeping drinking the Kool Aid............

While I think the class was probably about the best we could hope for under the coaching change circumstances, none the less we play in the SEC and we do not have the position players at many locations to compete and win in the SEC. To predict 8 wins is foolish until we at least see how the spring turns out. A few key injuries and the 2013 tean could be worse than the 2012 version. Not being negative but realistic.

You are being rational and for that you will be rewarded by getting the noise brought on you by others

Most have a bad case of the "oh no"s because of Bell, Lawson, and Ford. But if you look at most of these kids Butch was able to sign, they had multiple offers from schools that are winning more than us and are more stable than we are currently, yet they still chose to come here. Is it what we are accustomed to? No, but alot of these kids can be solid ballers. I particularly like Jenkins, Sutton, and Miller. Yes, Butch will have to do more with less, but there are some very good examples that this can be done: Beamer at VT, Petrino at Arky, and Franklin at Candy. All out-coached and out-played their respective recruiting ranking, and Butch can too. Will it be easy? No, but it can be done.

WE can talk recruits forever. The proof comes in the form of Coaching.
Can this staff coach up the recruits and the returning players and get some production out of them that the last staff didnt? I feel this year the goal needs to be 1. get to 6 or 7 wins. 2. get to a bowl game. 3. win the bowl game. If this staff can do at least the first two? I'll call that a step in the right direction.

Given the circumstances, we did as most expected. I do not think we'll get 8 wins, but I'll be pumped if that happens. I see more like 6-6. But I'm not gonna throw Butch under the bus either. We're young and I think a couple years from now, we could be back into the 8 to 9 win season.

Butch needed QBs that's what his offense revolves heavily around. He signed the best QB class in the country by far.

His offense will be a shock to the SEC in year one, much like A&Ms was this year (granted we may not have our Johnny football).

We should bring in both Crowell and Dyer, with the expectation that the new culture created at Tennessee will support their rehabilitation efforts. CBJ could say "You have an opportunity to be the best backfield in the SEC...or you can destroy your final chance to play in the NFL. Your choice."

Original thread, IMO.

Really though I agree. I'm happy with this class given all of the surrounding circumstances. A co-worker of mine was telling me that our previous staff stopped all recruiting activities when they knew Dooley was done for.

The Truth is we have lowered our expectations dramatically....it happens when losing becomes the norm

Next season excites me for one reason: we're going to see just how good a coach we got. His ability to keep us in it with recruits like Lawson and Levenberry was nice to see, but Bell's dad's comments about having no interest in UT once Jones was hired says a lot.

I'm quite certain coaches like Meyer are recruiting against us by calling Jones what he is, a Big East coach with no SEC/big time experience. Jones has to prove he belongs this year by winning some games he is supposed to lose, by getting more out of these players than Dooley did (shouldn't be too difficult), and by recruiting his ass off.

I'm convinced though, that if we have a bad season (i.e. lose to all the teams we're expected to, some in embarrassing fashion, only beat the cream puffs) we will have a mediocre '14 class and be on this path for a long time. The only thing that could potentially give us a great class, despite suckage this season, are all the legacies.

Bottom line: Jones has to win. Here's to hoping that we have a real coach this time around.

i dont think anyone has a problem with the recruiting class as much as the seemingly inevitable 500 at best season again...id love to see where these 8 wins are coming from though

I certainly hope this recruiting class turns out well for Tennessee but what really saddens me is to realize that we could not find 27 high schoolers with SEC talent willing to come and play for Tennessee.

My how times have changed.

Since Kool Aid doesn't work as well with Jones as it did with Dooley...are we now supposed to be drinking the Jones Orange Soda if we are blind followers????

One of the key things this staff needs to concentrate on this spring, summer, and fall is keeping our guys healthy. We are just a couple of injuries away from being in serious trouble. Hopefully they see all these guys coming back from injuries and do what is best for the health of the team. If we can go into the season healthy with no major injuries, I think we steal a few more wins than people think.

Keep dreaming.

Posts like these are just as stupid as the sky is falling posts.

You have no idea and just say what you are HOPING will happen.

My negative brethren are simply saying what they BELIEVE will happen.

Same concept, just different views.

Really? You had to respond by poisoning the well BEFORE making a good point or two?

While I think the class was probably about the best we could hope for under the coaching change circumstances, none the less we play in the SEC and we do not have the position players at many locations to compete and win in the SEC.
The roster is much better than you seem to believe but Jones' future will not ride on '13 alone. Eight wins is by no stretch out of the question. In fact, if he's the coach to get UT back then 8 wins is the proof. Otherwise plan on going through this same junk again in 3 years.

But I think your point is that trying hard but coming up short regardless of the reason hurts his chances of getting the job done. That is absolutely true. It may be perfectly "reasonable" to say that he did well considering the circumstances. But UT will not be given extra points because he dealt with a tough situation.

To predict 8 wins is foolish until we at least see how the spring turns out. A few key injuries and the 2013 tean could be worse than the 2012 version. Not being negative but realistic.

IMHO, we will know whether he can coach this fall and the divide is 8 wins in 13 games. That requires him to beat someone we currently do not expect to beat then one more or a bowl opponent. He has to beat all six of the teams UT should beat.

ALOT hinges on this year. He doesn't have to win the East but he needs to be better than expected. I don't see 6-7 wins or less giving him the needed credibility for recruiting. Even if he pulled off a great class next fall then next year looks like a VERY young roster on the lines. So you would have a mediocre '13 season potentially followed by a losing '14 season... and another coach looking for some magic dust to save his job in '15.

I am not "predicting" 8 wins... just saying his survival probably depends on getting that many.

A little optimism doesn't hurt, folks on here go way overboard though, in both directions. I'd say the ceiling is 7 wins next year, I'm hoping for 6-6 though, a bowl game would do the program a lot of good(as well as generate some revenue). It's hard to judge how good our competition wil be, it will be equally difficult to judge how this team is going to respond over the spring and summer. With that in mind and considering that Oregon is on the schedule in ooc, pulling 6 wins might be a tough task but, if we knock off mizzou like we should have last year and finish November strong again we should be playing another game a few days after Christmas. I think that ought to be the bar we set our expectations on this year as fans; being bowl eligible and competeing well, it's realistic and if we do better than that it's just a happy bonus.

Given the amount of ground they had to make up and the time they had to do it, the class isn't that bad. However, regardless of the circumstances, it's not the type of talent that will win games in the SEC. It's not Jones' fault for the mess he stepped into, it just is what it is. Hopefully they'll do better next year, but given the type of season that's probably coming this fall, it's tough to imagine things being significantly better in 2014.

LOL. You're saying that if Jones can't win 8 games with a squad that won 5 games last year AND then lost it's three best players then he won't succeed here. I don't think he has what it takes to win in the SEC, but I'm not going to hold him to such ridiculous standards either. He has almost zero SEC level talent to work with on the roster right now.
