...is proof enough it's time for Phil to go...

It's that simple. Until that 1930s-40s philosophy leaves the UT campus, there won't be too many SEC wins, never mind SEC titles or National Championships anymore...

I've coached other sports (not football)...but know you don't win consistently with a conservative mindset. You win by having supreme confidence that comes from hard work, mental toughness, and relationships with players that are POSITIVE and reinforce confidence in their ability...not calling timeout and looking panic stricken every time there's a tough 3rd down or 4th down call...

The conservative approach is more suited to a gameplan where you are totally overmatched at most every position...most every game.

IMO...

Keys to winning a college football game....

1. Score as many points as you can.
2. Keep the other team from scoring.
3. Limit mistakes.
4. Execute, execute, execute.

That would be my list.

How do you feel about your team's execution?

If you don't think the kicking game isn't a critical part of the game of football, you don't know very much about the sport. Recovering the muffed punt at the start of the game was huge. Getting a punt blocked in the UCLA game was huge. UF returning a punt for a TD was a killer. Special teams can turn a game around just as quick as a pick six or a quick offensive TD.

If I'm understanding what you're saying correctly, you don't believe special teams is an important aspect of football?

Exactly. Just ask Kentucky how important it is to block on punts and kicks. Resulted in giving up 24 points.

Special teams are just as important as offense and defense.

The reason that TN struggles in this area is because they don't believe that's true.

Exactly what I've been thinking to myself for the last ten years.

Since Meyer started coaching Florida, their offense has been great, defense good, and special teams excellent. If their special teams was like ours, they would not have had that much success in 06 and this year. Meyer puts a LOT of emphasis on special teams when they practice.

Special teams has the game changing ability that both the offense and defense has, maybe even more so. I just hope the next coach that comes in here realizes that.

I think he's saying punting instead of going for it, going for 3 instead of going for it on fourth are signs of too much conservative play. Anybody thinking special teams are unimportant would likely never be on a sports forum.

You'd be surprised.
