Dooley said he had wanted his players to run every step inside Neyland Stadium since he was hired in January 2010 but it didn't happen a year ago. With McKeefery on board this year, it did.
"I wanted to do that the first time, and we didn't do every stair. So then I told (McKeefery), this is what we need to do," Dooley said. "Make it a little tradition. Team run. I was all for it."
Aside from the physical gains of running every step inside the Vols' venerable Saturday home ---- the team ran the upper section, middle section and then lower bowl ---- McKeefery said it also derives a mental edge as well.
"At the beginning of the summer, we talked about, Coach Dooley and I wanted them to run this stadium so that they understood there's 106,000 people that come into this stadium, and a lot of them make as much of an investment as they can into watching you play. It's a major part of their lives as much as it is our lives," said McKeefery, an all-conference selection in both football and track in college at Ottawa. "So by running every step and understanding that we've got more than just the 105 guys here, when we go into Gainesville or we go into any of these other stadiums, we're walking in 106,000, 105 strong. We had a few people scared of heights and they got up on that third level. But we told them: you're going to have to get on a plane to go play the Gators, so you're going to have to get over that."
