The Tampa 2

All night long, his bull-rush was killing dude, he still had the spin move working, I'm not sure many people were actually watching the game or what...Freeney was Freeney, this will be about the 5th time I've said this....the Saints tackles held on 80% of the plays, plus they double teamed Freeney or used a TE to chip block...he played great considering he was doing it on 1 leg.

Nah, Freeney wasn't Freeney after halftime.

I don't remember anybody laying a paw on Brees in the second half. His jersey was damn near spotless

Freeney saw mostly double teams in the 2nd half also. Whether it was a guard-tackle combo, tackle-halfback, or tackle-tight end duo blocking him

Yea Florida will be better on offense if they play to Brantley's strengths and they get a power running game with an actual RB, the defense won't be; at least not early on.

Didn't they pick up a good back on signing day? Mack Brown right?

It is incredibly simple, if Freeney is his normal tazmanian devil self the Colts win the game, but if your only gonna rush 4 guys you got to have some quickness on the edges or a QB and offense like the Saints will find the holes.

I am glad the Vols are switching to more of a blitzing defense.

Edit: the more I think about it, we might miss ol Monty

not when we play teams that run the spread.:hi:

Zone defenses and blitz defenses both have their pros and cons.

Teams who primarily run zone coverages, such as Cover 2 and Tampa 2, rely heavily on a 1-gap DL to put pressure on the QB while the LB's and DB's attempt to confuse the QB by mixing up and disquising coverages. If you can't pressure the QB, then a competant passer will carve up a zone defense. If you have a beast DL, then it's a great defense. Another characteristic is they give up yards, but tend to limit the big play if the DEF is well coached and disciplined.

More aggressive DEF's, like a Zone-Blitz, comes with the chance that the extra blitzer will give the pass-rush the edge and pressure the QB into a sack or bad pass. Although, you also take away a man in coverage and put more pressure on your DB's in coverage. If they get beat and the blitz doesn't get there, then you leave yourself open for a big play.

I thought the Tampa 2 was extremely effective against Florida's offense. The coverage confused Tebow, and the pass-rush was able to get to him. With that said, quality talent is needed to make the Cover 2/Tampa 2 DEF's successful, so by the time the injury bug started biting the effectiveness of the DEF started degrading. If executed well, though, a blitz defense would work. Kind've like what Muschamp ran when Auburn beat Florida a few years back. It'd sure be a helluva' lot more entertaining to watch at least. :)

Hard to place the blame on the Clots D. Manning choked the game away.

Manning did pull a Manning, but he was calling a great game. The Saints did what you always hear the commentators talk about to their keys of the game and that is keep Manning off the field.

But coming into the 09 season all we heard about was stopping the spread, remember all the threads on VolNation proclaiming Monte to have laid the blueprint to beat the Gators.?

Give Monte more than three dtackles and something other than a third string freshman outside linebacker at middle linebacker, like he had at Florida he does just fine. Give belichick the same personnel we had at ole miss and va tech and he would get torched just as bad.

Good explaination on the defensive schemes ...but for the last time UT DID NOT RUN THE TAMPA 2 ...not even close. You saw it 1-3 times a game on 3rd and long. They did not run it against Florida ...except long yardage, They were in an 8 man front most of the game ..blitzing to the dead space to counter mis-direction. They ran 0 cover , cover 1 , some cover 2 . This was a hybrid defense leaning towards the 4-4 ,,,with aspects of the 3-4 , 5-2 , and 46 sprinkled in . Not even close to the Tampa zones.

looking at our roster what would be the best base defense for Tennessee?

I would say the 4-3 ...but college is so tough in that you really have to specialize . One week you are facing Bama who runs a power pro style , and you are playing a Spread Option against Florida on another week.

So I would say a 4-3 with alot of multiple stuff and disguised coverages ...kinda like what Monte did , but better against the spread. It will be hard to replicate his results against the pro style offenses ( Bama , UGA , USCjr ) but a creative coach could morph in an out of the various fronts from a 4-3 base ...using aspects of 4-2 , 3-4 , 46 , and 4-4 from the base and various cover schemes...cover 1 ( which we ran alot ) and cover 2 , and even cover 3 is somebody is pass happy .

Whatever they do , D line depth is going to be an issue ...espcially against power teams.
