The Steps

Florida blew us out, to be expected, they beat the **** out of us every year.

We played Georgia very well for a half, were still in it midway through the 3rd, just didn’t have enough to hang with them for 4 quarters.

On Bama’s goal line with a chance to make it a 1 score with 7 minutes left in the game before Guarantano’s inexplicable stupidity.

So, honestly, in 2 of the 3 games the final scores were misleading. 112-30 didn’t tell the full story at all imo.
Those are good points, but I don't think we realistically had a chance to beat any of the Big 3. Like you said Florida destroyed us. UGA was mainly a defensive team and they just wear you down late. Bama is a toss up. On one hand we were close to getting right back in the game. On the other hand, I think they just responded poorly to Tua going down. They were shell shocked which allowed us the possibility of getting back in the game. However, in the weeks after, Mac Jones took over the team and played really well down the stretch especially 325+ yards and 3 TDs vs Michigan. I do expect us to be more competitive in 2020 mainly because these guys know they can win.

I’d say there more than just these step to get back on top. The biggest and most important position in football is having a dynamic quarterback. Name a elite winning team that doesn’t have one. And unfortunately that’s a “no check” right now. I am optimistic of course that we might’ve just signed our franchise QB but we need to let him win the job from jg.
Then I’d say one of the big needs is having the right type of kids in the program. Kids like Trey smith and Henry t. This type kids are going to hold others accountable and really help improve the culture. So I’d say we have a check there (and we haven’t had those type kids in recent years).
As far as recruiting goes, we aren’t going to get the top 5 classes until we get into that top 10 ranking, 11 win season range. But here’s the great news...can absolutely win by signing top 10-12 classes. Until this last cycle Clemson had never had a top class. In fact if you go back and look at the cumulative roster (the last 4 years combined) Clemson was ranked just inside the top 10. We still need to improve here. Mainly at defensive back and defensive line imo...but I’d definitely give roster improvement a big check.

Umm..we were outscored 112-30 against the Big 3.
and that was in first half of the season.

That’s my point. The team showed the will to win in the back half of the season. These kids forgot how to win against equal opponents. They figured it out and won games they would have lost last year.

Learning to win is important.

A lot of the pieces are in place to be very good next year. It all comes down to consistent production from the QB position for the Vols to be competitive with the top 4 teams on the schedule. Developing a big, strong running back wouldn't hurt either
