Say what you want. I am excited about the future of TN Football. DD has had his moments but he has taken on an unbelievable challenge. Anyone that does not realize what he came into is not dealing with reality. With the talent we have and the talent the recruits coming in this year we are going to be back better than ever. It may not be next season but in two we will be playing for SEC titles on a consistent basis.

The pile on that the fans (im included at times) and the media have thrown onto the challenge is unbelievable. Everyone calling for DD to be fired have lost their minds.

I watched B Petrino at Louisville come in and win BIG and Often but always looking to get out of Louisville. He was the flash coach with a short term plan. When he left U of L is still recovering.

DD has a 5-7 season, totally unacceptable but not the end of the world and everyone is wanting to clean house. Granted if we go 6-6, or worse next season, I am going to admit he is not the right coach. But until now he has not had enough time for a complete evaluation. Dooley is building the VOLs for the long haul, the talent level is off the charts in some positions.

The Defense is going to be upgraded. JW is a good DC but he fielded the worst tackling defense I have ever witnessed, two years in a row. Losing him is not the end of the world. Steel/Shannon/Momma Dooley, whoever DD gets will be an upgrade.

to be critical of DD. I think he needs to engage the media more often, to calm the seas. Letting the feeding frenzy to escalate is his biggest downfall.

Well, in the man's defense, he's probably accustomed to dealing with rational adults.

Amen. You have passed the not-a-troll-nor-whiner test.

There is no indication that the ship has turned. Our last look at this team was UK. The O&W game will be our first indication of whether things have improved-- and by how much-- and the NCSU game will tell us if the team has grown up, able to play hard and finish or if they're still one half ponies. I hope so, but until then, UK is the water level.

I agree as well. West Coast coaches want to coach on the West Coast. Any stay East of the Mississippi is a stepping stone at getting back to the West Coast. I hold no grudges against CJW. That system is what he grew up with and has learned to like. However, now is our time to upgrade. Just do it Dooley and Hart, just do it!

Dooley irritated me saying he has Tennessee better than what he found it. No Kiffin had it better than he found it. I would say year 1 of Dooley was status quo then this year we took a step back. I realize DD is getting a 3rd year but I don't exhibit the same confidence in Dooley as you OP. I do know Tennessee will be back I just haven't seen enough to think it will be under Dooleys watch.

If we go 6-6 next season it is a certainty fella. I would say 8 total wins is the "magic number" for him. I hope he gets it and proves me and others wrong. With the schedule I think he can win 7 in reg season and up to the bowl game to get # 8. I hope its not Steele as DC as his Clemson Def looks pathetic this year. I hope we atleast talk to #54 Dale Jones! Go Vols!!!

Bringing in a PROVEN HC or at least a promising up and coming coordinator from an immensely successful team, buys you time to turn things around.

Hamilton hiring a coach who has no resume to speak of at the HC or Coordinator level, at a program like Tennessee...is an unmitigated disaster waiting to happen. You don't replace the CEO of Intel with one from a failing small company...and expect them to "turn it around."

I'm sorry, but I'm just calling a spade a spade. If a proven losing coach can't come in and affect even a modicum of improvement by year 2, you don't offer the customary waiting period...just ask Coach Nutt at Ole Miss. Oh wait. He got cut after 2 years, with a better resume going in, than Dooley.

Sitting in the stands at Fulmer's (A TURE LOYAL VOL) last Bama game, 1/3 of the stands were wearing crimson, Hamilton AD, the end was coming. Hire Kiffin and here comes the NCAA breathing down our necks as the plane left the runway. How many coaches turned down this job? Dooley is a man of character, coach? 2012 will answer this.
It was a long, bumpy decline, but for all of us who support the Vols can only hope the decision makers will return us to days of glory with guys who want and deserve to run through the T.

I'm off the offensive. I hope he does succeed next year even if I don't believe that he will. I'm so tired of watching putrid UT football and 6-7 win seasons. That is unfair to the fanbase. It sucks driving 12 hours round trip to see us get rolled by the LSUs, Alabamas, etc of the world. Next year's schedule easily sets up for 9-10 wins if we beat even one good team. And I include Florida in "good" just because we haven't beaten them in forever, even though I think they will be in a similar situation next year.

If I learned anything from the Fulmer debacle it was: Be Careful what you wish for.

I don't know if Dooley is the guy or not, but next year should tell us. I will say, I want him to be successful. He's a good face for the program, and, more than anything else, I want this mediocre crap to end. Not sure if another change does that.

One thing I would also like to ask: If we get Steele or Shannon, with the addition of Jay Graham last month, plus another good/great recruiting class: Is that a sinking ship?
