I suspect Pruitt and co. will run a traditional, smash mouth, run heavy offense this season. With how everyone else is transitioning to more spread and passing more than they used to, the defensive schemes will be more geared toward stopping that. This could help us if most defenses aren’t used to stopping a powerful run game.
We are going to lean on our strengths on offense, and our only strengths are O-line and running. We don’t have reliable QB play. I also suspect we see more Quavaris Crouch with the ball in his hands.

I agree with most of what you said, and I really look forward to seeing UT smash teams in the mouth. However, I don't think we'll see Crouch on O much ... Tee Hodge and Lenneth Whitehead will get the short yardage / situational carries, IMO.

I feel like we will have a more balanced attack this year. I know the OL should be the strength of this team and that running the ball seems to make the most sense, but if you play smash mouth football then defenses just stack the line. Our Jimmy's and Joe's are better than most of the SEC East but not OK, GA, FL and Bama. If we expect to beat any of those 4 teams we need to have a balanced attack and I think JG will be a good enough QB to lead the attack. I am not saying JG will be "all world" or anything just better than middle of the pack for SEC Qb's.

The number one thing that scares me this season - and in no way am I trying to bash on the guy, just calling a spade a spade - is JG getting into his own head and not doing what the coaches tell him to do on the field. Meaning run when you're supposed to and pass when you're supposed to...don't overthink it or try to be the on field hero.

I watched a high school team a few years ago make it to the second round of the state playoffs, they go on the road to play the number 1 team from the other region in the quad. They keep the game close all the way to the end of the 4th quarter. They march down the field like a band and get the ball first and goal on the 2. They try 4 consecutive passes and failed all four times.?.?. The opponent gets the ball back on the failed 4th down conversion and they take the next play 98 yards to the house and win the game. Needless to say, I heard " run the damn ball " screamed very loudly from the fans at the coaches.

I agree with you, I can only hope that being a senior and having a level headed OC and head coach will help JG. Plus this will be another year in the system that Chaney runs.

I keep hearing "smash mouth" thrown around this spring. Our OL should be excellent this year, but we don't have a single RB who falls into that category. Especially w Jordan's legal issues and Crouch's need in the middle of the D. Sure would be nice to get our speedsters in some open lanes tho.

I believe Chaney prefers to pass more than run if left to his own play calling, but we know Pruitt will decided the run/pass mix.

I agree with the overall message. However, with Crouch taking on a much larger role on defense next season, I would think you'll see someone else take the short yardage carries IMO.

We ranked 6th passing the football last year, we ranked 12th out of 14 in rushing last year, rushing has definitely not been a strength. You talk like it's a given that we are going to all of a sudden be good at running the football.

We throw for 200+ a game, we rush for 145/GM, we don't need JG to do more for us to be balanced, we need our running game to improve a bunch before we can ever consider being balanced.

If Crouch is the better option why would you change that? I think Crouch is likely to be our short yardage guy the entire time he's here unless one of the new young RBs is actually better at it than him. Crouch is an extremely talented football player.
