The role of talking smack in football

Please don't go there. He didn't do this on purpose, guys. He did the right thing by apologizing and putting it to bed. Now we're all heading to Sams Club to get our vittles for the TN-FL game in 7 months!!
this was definitely done on purpose.

TFPs Wes Rucker got an SEC response on why Spurrier was not slapped around for his Kiffin comment...

the main reason why this has been blown up as much as it has been is because foley decided to open his mouth. without him, this wouldn't be as big of a story.

Maybe it was off the cuff, but do you think for 1 second that a guy that has made as many recruiting contacts as Kiffin and has the recruiting expertise on staff that he does doesn't know the rules about when he can and can't contact a recruit?

Agreed. Foley took a relatively minor 12 hour story and put it on Sportscenter. No way the coverage would have blown up if he hadn't responded as if he was posting on a message board.

i really don't understand why some people think that class and humilty is a weakness. .......

Did you listen to his comments? Go back and listen if you didn’t. He made a comment in what was essentially a Pep Rally to fire up the crowd. Our opponents are trying to make it out to be much more than it really was; it’s called “gamesmanship”. Because some opponents are trying to turn it to their advantage we have some candya$$es over here whining. Give me a break!

Sharp tongue first, though obviously a great coach.

I am not suggesting we lie down and take beat-downs, but there are ways to be passionate and still classy. I think Pat Summitt is the perfect example of this, and I doubt anyone will contradict me when I say she is a winner.

Let's review what actually happened...

It was poor sportsmanship for CUM to call Richardson during Richardson's official visit at UT. It was poor sportsmanship for Saban and CUM to demand that their commits not visit UT. It was poor sportsmanship for whoever at Richardson's HS interfered with Richardson trying to fax his LI.

Kiffin simply pointed these things out...HOW DARE HIM!!!

Technically he was wrong on the recruiting violation...so what...he was correct in pointing out the poor display of sportsmanship.

During the Fulmer era, the Vol program was probably the national beacon of class.

I assume that was SARCASM.

If it wasn't than I'd agree only if you ignore the drunks, druggies and various other thuggish behavior that's tarnished this program over the past 10 years.

Yep, and the message here is loud and clear. Our coach doesn't know basic NCAA and SEC rules. OUCH!

I think the message here is that woman don't understand the art of talking smack. It's a man thing. If you want your prestine sportsmanship and nicey nice than stick with woman's basketball.

As Jack Nickalson would say, "you can't handle the truth".

we aren't a spurrier-type program. and, win or lose, i'm glad we aren't. we have a tremendous history of winning games (one that, over the long-term, actually overshadows that of florida and many of our other archrivals) and doing so with class, dignity and humility.

we don't have to stoop to their level to win. we just have to develop our players, stay determined and play some give-it-your-all football.

in the end, we want to be remembered (as we already are) for our wins and for the richness of our tradition rather than the clever (or not-so-clever) insults our coach has been throwing around. spurrier was a great coach, with many wins to his name, but his legacy and reputation is that of a guy with a sharp tongue, and, as of late, not that of a winner.

i don't want that for tennessee.

GO VOLS!

Are you under the impression that all of this is not designed to get wins?

I agree..

Kiffin should have said that he thought the actions were unprofessional, possibly unethical, but probably not illegal.

you've gotta back the smack first, hon.
