I thought it was very interesting how a California guy said he always watched Tennessee in the primetime slot and that played a big part in his decision.

I know the game has completely changed since the late 90s but I wonder how long we'll feel the effects of the past 8 years in that aspect. Butch seems to have overcome those obstacles but I wonder how many guys he reaches out to that don't even think about us because they've never seen us in the spot light or at least not in a good way (Bama every year.) Obviously we're okay on the recruiting side of things. Just food for thought.

Seeing how Tennessee went from a team that could pull recruits from California to one that for a time lost the best instate talent to Bama, Florida State, ect ect before Butch got here, getting to the point that prospects around the country make watching the Vols a priority again can't hurt at all.

How about losing Randall Cobb to the Mildcats....that was all pretty much on CPF from what I remember. :realmad:

True story: I was sitting with Fulmer in his office in August 1999, just before a practice, and after a 30-40 minute discussion, the big guy very abruptly ended our conservation. I was a bit startled before he said that a prospect had arrived and he needed to meet him. It was C. Clausen, and he was not going to keep him waiting. Clausen attended the practice, and spent quite a bit of time standing close to Sanders and observing the offense. I couldn't help but notice that day how vocal and decisive Chavis was on the practice field whereas Sanders' was quiet--I never heard his voice raised above the din of practice. Telling, no?

The Vols were at their zenith when Clausen committed. We were a powerhouse, had just won a national title, P. Manning had raised our profile tremendously, and his father was smitten with the SEC and liked UT very much. What wasn't to like at that time? And Clausen of course proved to be a very effective QB--a clutch performer. Those were the days...

Jones just needs to keep recruiting, winning big will soon follow....

CPF got a raw deal in that. If anything he should be respected for being truthful to the kid. Cobb wanted to play qb here. Fulmer told him he could compete but his skill set was at receiver or running back. Kentucky told him he would play qb. Basically they lied as he only played in essence a wildcat package. He probably would have done that here too. So looking back what skill set has Randall Cobb in the NFL? It's obvious our legendary coach as he did for his entire career have a keen eye for evaluating talent. Sorry I just get tired of people who don't know the situation and say Fulmer didn't recruit Cobb. He absolutely did and did it with straightforward honest evaluating. Kentucky told him what he wanted to hear.

So Butch must be a liar by doing the exact same thing to Jennings. IIRC UT told Cobb late in his recruitment that he could play QB here but he did not believe them and went on to UK. Cobb made the best decision for him.

Butch didn't do the exact same thing to Jennings. If Jennings doesn't approach the coaches about switching, he's 3rd or 4th string at QB right now. He just saw the writing early and got on to being great.

Beat me to it. Jennings was given the opportunity to play QB he was certainly never lied too.

I remember Casey attended a Notre Dame camp and Bob Davie told him he didn't run well enough to lead their run oriented offense. I'm sure that Casey took great pride in that touchdown run he had at South Bend against the Fighting Irish. Of course Casey wasn't an option qb, or even a running qb, but still.. Anything you can use for motivation. I do remember we smashed the Irish that day. And you know the announcers were sure to bring that story up.

j/k - he was a pretty good QB, I wonder had cut been calling plays for him if he wouldve had an even better career.
He and his brothers just never had great arms.

No doubt. Crazy legs made a heck of a dive into the end zone. Then stared down the ND coaches. That was funny.
