The '99 FSU squad was a lot better than the '98 squad Tennessee faced for some obvious reasons.

Regardless, I find it odd that you don't seem to believe a make believe matchup with that team would be problematic seeing as how the 1999 Vols lost to two teams that were clearly inferior to that Florida State squad.

Spurrier's lone championship, you beat a Florida State team that had just pummeled you in the regular season. It's called WHY THEY PLAY THE GAME.

Yeah, FSU did have 40 year old Chris Weinke at QB in '99. He was definitely better than the Rooster. '99 just wasn't meant to be although we did manhandle SEC champ Alabama (beat Florida twice that year) pretty easily in Tuscaloosa.

Problematic yes, but the games aren't played on paper.

I think the '99 Vols would've ultimately matched up better than the Hokies, but likely suffered the same fate.

Who knows what could've happened if the stumble at Arkansas never happened and Tennessee gets the rematch with Bama in Atlanta.

The psyche of the team going into the bowl game would have been completely different.

I agree. The focus wasn't where it needed to be for the most part. However, if that team was in an SEC title game versus Bama or in the Sugar bowl against FSU who knows what they were capable of? We were better than VPI.

a 3rd and 3 run for -1 yard toss right and following play 4th and 4 toss left -1 yard two dumb play calls both of them I would have dropped Tee back and if there is nothing there run it it was a 23-21 game thats what i remember Phil doing i always knew what play was coming lead up middle toss play pass.. Man there was alot of good players on the field Tennessee could have had alot of Rings 97,98,99,2001

Tee Martin not being able to throw consistently and having some horrible picks was 1999s biggest failures. Also not having Cut which was a big reason for Tee not playing well.

If given the choice between Tee Martin dropping back and putting it in Jamal Lewis' hands to get 3 yards, I'd have made the same playcalls.

I liked Tee Martin, but he's the subject of some serious revisionist history. He was not all that accurate and, while athletic, he was not the classic dual threat QB with insane wheels either.

Revisionist history? I believe Tee set a record for consecutive completions. His wheels? I never had qualms when he took off running, and, in fact, was almost always glad to see that happen. :question:

He really wasn't though.

His senior year he was 165 completions on 305 attempts (so 54.1%) (2300 yards. 12 TDs to 9 INTs).


(I'm also not sure if his deal was that he was fast but rather he made those gutsy types of runs where he'd get the extra yardage, along those lines of diving out of bounds but reaching the ball back inbounds for extra yardage/the endzone pylon while doing such...but I'm also not really arguing more one way or another on that right now.)

The South Carolina game in '98 was an outlier. They finished 1-10 that year. For his career, Tee Martin's completion pct was just 55.4%. He frequently threw too high and hard. As far as rushing, he had 614 yards in his two seasons as a starter (which isn't bad considering the system he was in didn't feature the QB as a rusher) but that was only 3 yards per carry.

What he should have done is told Ole Miss he would join the team after the national championship. And you're right, a person should always put money above everything else. Funny that Ole Miss repaid his loyalty by firing him one season after Eli left, which is the only reason they gave him the job. If he had stayed at UT he would have become the head coach of one of the top football programs in the country. But I guess he's happy at Duke playing 2nd fiddle to the basket ball team

He's happy teaching football and has been successful where many have failed or bailed (Spurrier). Can't see how you'd spin this negatively...not without spitting up bile all over yourself. :yu:

Florida is his alma mater.

No but he did do 2 stints there - once as OC and again as HBC.

He has a lot of respect for Duke and proud of what they did there. Beat Johnny in '88 to help us start 0-6

We won. What difference does it make? For what it's worth, any football coach in the country would be 2nd fiddle to K, other than Saban. That would be neck and neck.

It's a respect thing. We bash the players in 99 for focusing on the NFL instead of winning but not the coach who left before the biggest game in recent UT history. If we make the playoffs this year and Shoop leaves before the 1st game to take a head coaching gig should fans be upset? What if Barnett tweaks his ankle in SEC championship and decides to sit out the playoffs because he doesn't want to hurt his draft stock by potentially aggravating it further? In both scenarios these guys would be roasted on here, win or lose. Double standard for Cut I guess
