Always kinda silly reminding those down in former Republic of Texas that they’d be Northren Mexico Territory if not for the Volunteers. While Sam Houston was born in Virginia, he’d certainly be remembered as a Tennessean similar to Andrew Jackson who was responsible for adding Florida and Louisiana to the United States. James K Polk completed Jackson’s vision of manifest destiny…. California can give us thanks too.

Just gotta tell them “Remember the Alamo” and give thanks to the Tennesseans who gave their all for their freedom.

There was no University of Tennessee until after the War of Northern Aggression. It's pretty disingenuous to use 1794 as the founding date.

It’s not a controversial way of counting the years to use the date of the original charter. The university suspended classes during the War of Southern Idiocy because the campus was occupied but restarted class in 1866.

You probably should get started on that spreadsheet of the true founding (in your eyes) of every university in the US, then, because name changes are incredibly common.

If you want a spreadsheet then knock yourself out. Yes schools often change names but in our case it was also the function / scope that changed. Tennessee didn't have a flagship state university until East Tennessee College got the land grant funds in the late 1860's and it became UT.

Could you go and make a list of all of the American public universities from before the 1860s? You'll learn a lot.

It's apparent that you are not! But doing the reading would enlighten and maybe even please you, if you take joy from reading about education history and the history of education policy.

Use of public funds for education was one of the things that derailed Seward's path to the Republican Party presidential nomination in the antebellum period. The bigger story is fascinating, but is better read from a book than from here.
