The real story on Randall Cobb, straight from the horses mouth

We know there was more to the story than that. He wanted to be a QB. KY told him he could and UT was honest with him. He didn’t slip through UT’s fingers, he made a choice.
Exactly. This was all at the end of the Fulmer regime.

Fulmer/Cutcliffe and then Dave Clawson wanted Randall Cobb as a receiver and had Taj Boyd and Bryce Petty committed to run Clawson's offense when Fulmer was fired during the 2008 season which was Cobb's first year at UK. Crompton was a RS Junior in 2008. If Clawson had worked out, the Vols would have had Crompton, Boyd and Petty in the QB room in 2008 and 2009. Even as a dual threat, Randall Cobb was behind Boyd and Petty as a QB.

As it was, Cobb played QB for all of 4 games in his freshman year. He was always a WR and was drafted as such.

Bored at work, ran some numbers (I've hijacked the thread, but I don't care, also I included vacated wins, the NCAA is dumb)

The 12 SEC coaches in 2008 had a combined 1835 total collegiate wins and 1738 FBS wins (Nutt had 31 FCS wins and Johnson had 60 FCS wins). That's an average of 153 wins. Ten coaches had 100 FBS wins. Even taking out Saban's 297, you are talking 140 wins per coach (take out Croom's 21 and you get 151.7 wins). Just insane man.

Omg what a funny dude, that Carson interview is GOLD.
He will always be the lone biker of the apocalypse to me….🤣🤣🤣
The guy was amazing.

Larry Holmes pounded his face into ground beef.

Calling that fight made Howard Cosell leave the ringside!

I’m sorry but his version of how it happened is BS…he wanted to be a QB…we were honest and said “we’re recruiting you as a WR”…UK lied and said “sure, you can be a QB”…shortly after arriving he ended up at WR…and lost to UT every year he played us…end of story
Sounds like when Fulmer told Ronnie Brown he was a LB…he went to Auburn and played RB…Fulmer WBA’s 180 degree out from Butch…

Yep. While we’re at it, let’s bemoan Fulmer letting Chad Pennington get away. Nevermind that we already had #16 at the time.
Probably the dumbest post in the history of this forum EZE. :)

So what wr did we have when we lost Cobb that was the position equal of Peyton.

Fulmer WAS a great recruiter early in his career. After he won the NC(kudos a great achievement for sure) he got fat, arrgoant and lazy). After the 2001 loss to LSU he was pretty much done with Richt, Saban, Meyer, Spurrier and others eating his lunch recruiting and on the field.

Not only did he lose Cobb and Willis but he completely blew off Tyson Clabo and Garrett Reynolds , both legacies in Knoxville that had long careers in the League. He had some success in 06 and 07 when he brought Cut back but even though the made the SECCG in 07 he still lost to Meyer and Saban by a combined 100-34. And this was far and away Saban's worst team.

To be sure Willis and Cobb never beat us but one could make the case that if they had come to UT Fulmer might have been coach another 7 or 8 years.

Great recruiter? Check his last 2 classes 07 and 08. 2 players drafted , Stocker in the 4th round and Denarius Moore in the 5th in 11. His 08 class had zero he signed.

It's a great achievement winning a Nattie but ask Mack Brown and Jimbo Fisher if it guarantees you a job for life.

In the SEC, most of the time, even the "bad coaches" aren't bad coaches. LSU has had 2, I think, objectively bumbling coaches and each won a national title (and played for 3 total!).

If you look at another snapshot in time...2016:

Who is the worst coach in that list? Mason? Muschamp? Butch? Each of those guys still had multiple respectable seasons (by that school's standards) at each of those jobs. He benefited from a down SEC East, but McElwain, who is absolutely not a good head coach, went to Atlanta twice and went 16-8 in conference play in 2+ seasons.

Oh please, if Fulmer recruited those guys (Clabo was considering MTSU and Marshall before going to Wake and Reynolds' 4 offers were UNC, Nebraska, Northwestern, and Virginia Tech) people would've lost their ever-loving minds over why he recruited guys with such bad offers. Yes, what they did after leaving college is impressive, but hindsight is always 20/20.
