The overall problem is that Tennessee hasn't at least had a Ron Zook. Zook didn't win (or win enough) but he left talent behind.

There isn't a Tennessee coach in this trail of tears that has left a much better roster than when he arrived. Each new hire has needed at least 2 full season recruiting classes (the first one doesn't count) to have a chance to compete.
Exactly

Feel bad if 2007 defense is one of the best you can remember.

Gave up 100 points to FL and AL and finished around 70th in total defense and 61st in scoring defense.

Fulmer started the slide that still continues with this program.

I'd love to see the results of your IQ test, would be quite humorous.

The defensive stats are misleading. That last defense was very good and had they been paired with even a competent offense; it would have been among the premier defenses in football.

Guess Fulmer gets the credit for the defense but not hiring Clawson in your mind.

And I don't see 57th in total defense as anywhere near elite.

I find it funny....Urban Meyer/Tim Tebow....that is what happened to Phil Fulmer. Fans were sick of our old school pound the rock pro-style slow tempo offense.

After torching Urban Meyer/Florida in a bowl game...Lloyd Carr’s final game btw...Mike DeBord was Fulmer’s top pick for OC....but the pressure to be a high flying spread option offense pushed his hand to go with Dave Clausen for the Claufense.

Even more irony....Lane Kiffin runs off Tahj Boyd’s commitment here. Derek Dooley does not take a single OL in a whole recruiting class. Then Butch Jones recruiting nearly all MAC level OL’s with garbage coaching up and CURVES level strength/conditioning....YAHTZEE!

Jeremy Pruitt has 3 maybe 4 SEC caliber OL’s on this roster. Outside of Freshman Jerome Carvin, Junior Trey Smith who's football career is over, and the Bama transfer that wrecked his knee for the season Brandon Kennedy....that's it. Drew Richmond was a 5* bust with an SEC to physique.

Its an old and tired argument but fools like you keep spouting this nonsense. Fulmer went to 2 sec title games in his last 5yrs. Had the no.3 clas, that was absolutely loaded, when fired. Maybe the AD program should have given him more support. What type of ad gives their hof HC the least amount of money to hire an OC the year after they went to an SEC title game? And that's just one public example of the lack of support he got. I think we can all agree that the 10yrs since the admin has continued to show its lack of support for the program. Yet fulmer was still fielding competitive football teams.

But you're so smart. It was all fulmers fault.
But not as old and tired as holding on to the past and fulmers nutsack
Keep slurping tho

Let me guess - you have class tho bc you "respect" him?

Fulmer should have been gone after 2005. Even then he was given a chance to keep his job and Cutcliffe came in and actually coached the team back up for 2 more years. Fulmer flamed right back out when he left.

The hires after Fulmer were the issue. Turned down several very good coaches and picked idiots. The Dooley hire was especially bad. They didn't even care who else applied. Dooley was a good ole boy and not some big city slickster like Kiffin so they hired him. Not made a single good hire in the AD since then besides Rick Barnes.

There's a difference between sliding into a mid-tier bowl team and plummeting to record setting ineptitude

Where did I say there wasn't?

This slide had to start somewhere though and it's readily apparent that 2008 was that point with Fulmer at the helm.

Agree wholeheartedly with your post.

And they lucked into Barnes with geography and timing with him going stale at Texas and was wanting to be closer to family in NC.

Just dumb. The year before he was in secc we are getting what we deserve

Agree. It can be debated whether it was time for Fulmer to go or not, but the way we chose to send him off is inexcusable. You should not fire a coach six months after giving him a raise and extension. Hamilton had no balls. He should have stuck with Fulmer another year or two while looking for a good top notch replacement. Instead he hired that trash Kiffin, and yes, we are now getting what we deserve.

Am i the only one who has a hard time understanding why we still debate Fulmer? It has been 20 years since the man's championship.

We're UT. Honestly all the hype of who we should be is based on our love for this program because there has been NOTHING the past decade which can make anyone say we should do anything ...except exactly what we're doing....which is sucking.
Every program was built on something. Same goes with the fanbase; eventually one day we will be back but right now the struggles are so evident that it’s hard to be optimistic

Anybody else realize how Bob Shoop is doing at Mississippi State. Damnit Butch was such a controlling piece of mule dung.

I was SO excited when we hired Bob. Took notice of him while he was at Vandy. And CBJ absolutely neutered the best defensive mind weve had on the hill since Chief. Wasted!

Kiffin ended up starting 2 undersized walkons and an undersized converted Fr TE on the OL. Their only QB option was Crompton. They had one SEC quality RB. Dan Williams was the only true SEC quality DT on the team.

And yet somehow he went 7-6, and a blocked FG away from beating Bama.

Botch recruited fitness players. We are soft. That has to be recruited and coached out.

I'd say he had a pretty good DC that year....

But more to that point. That DC would end up depending on players especially at LB that would never again see significant PT. Not exactly sure what you point is but Fulmer likely would have been blown off the field by that Bama team and UF as well.

I hate it but the game passed Fulmer by and he didn't adjust. He didn't adjust his approach to recruiting or on the field. That's where this downward spiral started.
