1. Tennessee played really inconsistent basketball, but came up with a win, something they didn't do against Texas A&M. It's a win. It's progress. Tennessee did what they had to do.

2. Jarnell Stokes' interior defense in the last four minutes of the game was the best defensive performance of his career. He altered five shots at the end of the game. He did not play a good game (for him) but he did a great job making sure Tennessee got the victory.

3. Antonio Barton had some nice moments today, and handled the press better than he has and zero turnovers against Arkansas deserves some praise, but when you have two free throws in a four point game with less than a minute to go, you must hit them. If you don't, your team loses confidence, especially since you are the senior point guard of the team. That could be a concern.

4. Do you know what a senior does however? Suck in the first half, then take over the game in the second half when the team looks to him. That is what Jordan McRae. I have no idea why but I got nostalgic seeing him at the free throw line at the end of the game about watching him throughout his career and just was happy for him. It was a wonderful job by him.

5. We all ***** about the offense and whine and moan and complain and yada yada yada. Tennessee won on their defense in the final ten minutes of the game. Offense is fun to talk about, but when Tennessee plays defense hard and aggessive, they win games.

6. What did Tennessee do with their defense? They stopped switching so much and started showing more. The switching gave Arkansas too much room to drive. It was a good adjustment by the coaching staff, and Arkansas really struggled to get to the paint. They also added a little more ball pressure near the end, which I have been somewhat against. It worked tonight.

7. Bernard King Player of the Game: Jordan McRae. My thoughts were mostly in number 4, but it should be mentioned some more. He got his ass back on defense, he crashed the boards, and he attacked the basket to get to the line. His shots were in rhythm.

8. Armani Moore should get more minutes. He had four blocks, a steal, and four boards. Watching him in the first half and it's clear he's ready to play ball.

9. Turnovers were not too bad tonight. 15 is high, but against a team like Arkansas, and Tennessee initiating a more uptempo style tonight, it could have been worse. The one that got away from Jordan McRae and lead to a bucket in the final minute cannot happen.

10. Cuonzo Martin is 3-0 against Florida for his career. It's a good omen. However, tonight's performance would not have gotten the job done. The good news? The game is not till Saturday. If UT attacks the basket, rebounds, and stays in front of their man, they will win. This is a really good Florida team, but Tennessee can beat anyone when they are on their game. This is the biggest game of the year. If UT wins, we can talk seeding for the tourney now. This team must get this victory Saturday.

Go Vols!!! :hi:

We may not win in Gainesville, but a blowout would shock me.

I agree.

I expect a game much like at Wichita state and kentucky.

We have florida's number so maybe we can get it inside of 5min unlike the other 2 games.

The 3-0 against UF is a nice thought, but I'll be surprised if we don't get housed in Gainesville.

I will not be surprised if we win, straight up. That's the kind of crazy year it has been for us. Furthermore, are you aware of our success against Florida and Donovan in hoops? Donovan has a losing record all-time against UT.

Nice win tonight. I wasn't feeling too good when we were down 8 in the 2nd half. Didn't get to see it live. DVR'd it so I'll watch it tonight.

McRae carried us like he did so many times last year. Stokes has got to be more consistent if he ever has any aspirations of playing in the NBA. Good thing we hit our free throws. UT only hit one basket in the final 8 minutes of the game.

On to Gainesville. I don't expect a win, but we seem to play better on the road than at home this year at times. Just won't get many calls.

Great stuff as usual, ZJC. Totally agree about Armani - to me, he's like the second coming of J.P. Prince: can't shoot, but a freak athlete who helps your team in a lot of ways (slashing to the rim, blocking shots, wreaking havoc). I'm not sure how A.J. got so far in the doghouse, but it seems to me that he needs to see about 5 minutes a game to spell Maymon, who looked like he was about to pass out by the end of it. Granted, Maymon had a great game (and got little help from Stokes), but he's not going to have much to give down the stretch if he keeps being forced to play this many minutes.

I was thinking same thing - Davis has been on a milk carton. What happened?

He's just not working in practice or doing too well in games to get minutes and it doesn't help that we started out in SEC play against some great bigs and he's not ready to go one on one with them YET.

Arkansas played a good game and had us where they wanted us, but a poorly timed intentional foul and a sudden loss of confidence killed their chances. They will get it together, just glad it wasn't against us...

Florida has to play tomorrow night so they have a short turnaround for Saturday's game. Maybe a small advantage there. I will take any we can get.

Ill take that W. Glad they tested pushing the tempo early. Hopefully there were some takeaways that will help them in practice this week.

I think we match up fairly even Florida. Like the UK game, we need to come out and try to be strong in the paint. I think this one will be a grind-it-out kind of game. My biggest concern is them getting hot from 3. As long as we can knock down a few of our own (w/o jacking them up), then this one will come down to the end.

Nice to see us win a game shooting as poorly as we did. As I detailed in another thread, we have struggled to win when we shoot less than 50% (we were 4-6 before tonight shooting less than 50%).

To accomplish this, we have to do something else well. In tonight's case, you outrebound your opponent, you block 10 shots, and you hit 30-37 from the FT line. Those combined to mitigate a below average shooting night. We usually lose these kind of games, so while it looked ugly for 35 minutes, we came up big when it mattered, and that is improvement.

Agreed. I think it will be a close game.

I think we could see more of him on Saturday

We outrebounded Ark by 5, but Ark is not a good rebounding team so I'll say that's a small victory for Ark tonight. They had more 2nd chance points than UT did. We won by finally hitting our free throws tonight and big games from McRae and Maymon.

We average 1.9 more rebounds per game than Arkansas (39.4 to 37.5). If they are bad, we are only marginally better given those numbers. As you said, we had 5 more than they did tonight. Not sure how that is a small victory for Arkansas.

But yes, we hit our FTs (as I noted as well), and McRae and Maymon had big games.

I'll be in Gainesville on Sat.

Anyone else going? Let's all get together prior to the game.
