The older Vol Fans have always considered a victory over Alabama would salvage any season. I am 64 years old and still do not consider a season a total loss if we have an Alabama victory. To be honest though, that doesn't look too promising either. I am at a total loss as to why we have fielded such a seemingly hapless offense. Most blame coaching and that may be it but Fulmer has fielded many good teams in the past. I think I am more disappointed in the offensive line than any aspect of the team. This was supposed to be perhaps the best offensive line in the history of UT football yet they don't seem to to be able to move anyone even a foot to open a hole for the run. I am not here with answers. I am just a very disappointed fan and am waiting on the Alabama game to salvage my season. If that doesn't happen it's going to be a long offseason for me.

I haven't broken it down but the run schemes just don't look like power run schemes to me.

While it can be effective, the play were Riggs starts offset on oneside, takes the hand-off then runs down the line to the otherside drives me nuts. Any penetration of the line and he's toast. I'd rather see lead fullback blocking either in toss sweeps or powering into the line.

I agree that the loss of a run game is the most difficult thing to swallow this year. I just can't imagine how this line got to be so bad (other than they are way to heavy). I agree. I want to see a fullback in to lead the way or take out a LB. If Anderson can't get it done (too big) then put in whoever, just hit somebody. The one play I hate that TN does is the toss sweep into the short side. I have seen it ran well by other teams but we have never ran that play well. I killed us in FLorida a few years ago. I think we pitch it too deep or our OL just cant do two things at once (run and block). My question for this year's line is if these boys aren't getting it done, then put in the next line and see what a little bench time will do. There must be someone on the bench that wants to hit somebody.

Here's an attempt at the running woes. We use a finesse blocking scheme called zone blocking. In order to get a grasp of this if you have a recording of the game watch the line when we had the ball on our own goal line. Anyway, zone schemes are pretty complicated and depend on evey lineman actually making his predetermined block. The center ususally calls the blocking scheme at the LOS when he sees the defensive formation. With a zone scheme, more time is required to create a hole for the RB. In addition, xone schemes require considerably more "teamwork" and knowing what your line "neighbors" do under certain cirucmstances. Each week, we've had a new mixture of linemen start the game. It has been impossible for these guys to learn how to block "together" as a team. Now, back to the game film. If you have the tape or DVD, watch our slowly developing running play where Riggs takes the hand-off deep in the end zone and pay attention to the chinese firedrill by our blockers. Chris Brown misses his block, Corey Anderson apparently has forgotten the snap count and he GA DL explodes towards Riggs. This is an example of what happens many times on running plays.

So here are my thoughts. With injuries, our OL has been kinda young. Too much thought goes into these intricate themes (sometimes OL aren't as smart as Munoz was), too much time between the snap and the hole, our teamwork hasn't developed with our injury situation, hence this xone blocking strategy has totally backfired on us. I wish and hope the offensive coaches will spend the 2 weeks off and put in the old bulldozer blocking scheme we used until 3 years ago.

One question for anybody who knows. USC runs the ball well. The Pac 10 has mediocre defenses so they say. USC blows people away in the run game with 2 rbs. Auburn last year did the same. COmpare these 2 OL with ours. Tell me what makes them better and what blocking scheme they are using cause it works! I think Reggie Bush is a big difference but we have speed and talent at TB as well (Lamarcus Coker, Foster, Riggs). If the xone is not working-screw it and look at what does work and do what college students do best-plagiarize.

do we pack the line too tight? I dont think the line is giving big enough gaps to make the defensive line committ one direction or the other. our line is looking like a dog pile.

ps. i am sicking of seeing the opposing defensive ends standing in the backfield waiting to pounce the run game. if we give bigger gaps these guys arent getting in on the play.

dude, we have blockers resposible for the DEs or more accurately the CBs that blitz. We haven't learned our blocking schemes well enough to run this complicated strategy.

I will give them credit for one thing. The do a decent job a pass blocking. Not blitz pick up mind you but straight up pass blocking. So upsetting. I think I am going to go and listen to Lil' Mike eat up Jimmy and the boys on the radio.

watch a game with usc, wisconsin, or cal. those lineman can get down field and hit the linebacker and even trounce dbs on big runs. getting old watching the muddle huddle with minimal gain.

ps. spread that d*mn offensive line!!

I much agree with the Zone Blocking being suspect. Our OL is way to big and strong for it IMO.
The Ga game was the first this season we have had our pick of the best 5 to put out there. BHAMVOLFAN, nailed the injury and finesse situation.
Pulling 310-320 lb guards on fast DL's, LB's :nono:

We need to let our size and strength do the work, fire off the ball and stand the DL up. There wouldnt have to be so much continuity between knowing your assignment and the four other guys job on the OL.
I havent went back and watched the Ga game, But from the middle of section "S" i can recall, 4th Qtr were pinned back at our own 1. Just trying to punch it out of the "danger zone" i think it was after 2nd down, Rob had pulled right, (Im a Rob Smith fan so i watch him) he limped back to the huddle.
I just cant see trying to scheme these guys to death any longer.
