The Official Xavier @ Tennessee Game Thread (Wed. March 5th 5:30PM EST) (SECNET+)

Anyone catch Tony V post game? Did he have less angst as compared to last night.

Perhaps last night, Tony V was aggravated with the fielding errors, pitching woes, base running errors and general early malaise of the team coupled with media question about Osuna (reading between the lines maybe Tony V thinks the media should be going after the AA instead of asking boneheaded questions about the player)??? Just my thoughts.

He was a bit mellower tonight. His question last night regarding Osuna was framed differently tonight, and it sounds like he wants the media to ask Osuna some questions, maybe someone else will have a different take, but that was mine this evening.

edit: He also stated Osuna wants to coach, and reiterated that they will make his time here valuable. Sounds like he is gonna be a part of team whether he sees the field or not.

GBO!!!

Well I appreciate that - the local beat guys need to step up.

I thought it was interesting that he brought up the situation with Ahuna. Unless my ears are betraying me, he said someone tweeted that we paid Ahuna a lot of money, and that “wreaked havoc” and led to people leaving the team. Again, I’m paraphrasing a bit, but that was the gist.

Is he referring to Burns?

Darren Rovell tweeted that UT paid Maui Ahuna $400K to transfer to TN. It was erroneous. UT supposedly provided a downtown condo and some $ for Ahuna, but it was nowhere close to $400K. It certainly upset the clubhouse and created chaos when a transfer is reportedly making BIG $ and the loyal stars on the team are making peanuts.

CTV was livid regarding the Osuna situation, and his perceived lack of media and fan support for Osuna. Osuna even coached 1B for an inning during the Radford game.

Most people don't want infinite eligibility for these guys. It sucks for Osuna. I wish he could go back to Tampa at the very least, but the problem with how quiet people have been about it is simply because most people think his, Pavia's, etc, cases are ridiculous.

CTV said long term Osuna wants to be a coach...so this may actually end up being a great spot for him to get his feet wet in the coaching world.

Hopefully 15-20-30 years from now he looks at all this as a blessing in disguise.

I believe you are spot on. I think the Pavia ruling was wrong and hope it’s overturned. So, why would I be pulling for a similar ruling in the Osuna case—especially when he just joined the team 2 weeks before the season started??? I hope Osuna learns a ton this season and has a long and successful career in coaching (if that’s truly what he wants to do). All reports suggest he’s an awesome person and teammate. Personally, I don’t like CTV comparing him to VFLs like Kirby Connell who’s spent 6 years pouring into the TN program!

As a fan and booster, I’m going to give my support to the TN players who have been on the team (at least since last August). I will go above and beyond supporting the VFLs like Trey Lipscomb, Kirby Connell, Evan Russell, Hunter Ensley, Blake Burke, Christian Moore, Zander Zechrist, Drew Beam, Reese Chapman, Colby Backus, etc.

I've been surprised at how outspoken TV has been on this issue. He is usually more reserved and calculated and doesn't call out the fans and/or media like he has in the last 2 press conferences. I hope he isn't starting to turn into Saban where he feels like he's God in our city.

No he’s humble at heart but just passionate when he feels someone he cares about has been slighted. He’s a generational Coach that just feels horrible about the whole situation. End of day, this coaching apprenticeship might turn out to be the best thing to happen to Osuna.

Note all you want. The dude isn’t the best shortstop on the team. He is better at third. But at the plate he should not be the lead off man. He takes way more good pitches than bad.
Ah yes! The guy hitting .356 and projected 1st round pick should not be hitting lead off...

More likely than not, Curley will play this game for a long time

The way I took it was Vitello is gutted by the entire thing. Really likes Osuna and genuinely believed they were doing right by him.

I've seen/heard a few somewhat callous media comments about the situation and I assume he saw the same ones. Nothing awful, but the "Eh, he knew what he got into when we went juco" type thing. Which Vitello rightfully pointed out there might be more than one reason a player goes the Juco route...maybe a financial barrier to a 4 year school and perhaps a language hurdle. Its not always as simple as things seem.

Regardless of what I feel about the situation, I think it perfectly shows why Vitello is the coach he is. He's a normal coach but when its time to fight for his guys he will absolutely go to war.

Xavier was the best win (numbers wise) of the season.

Xavier was #1 RPI and now sit at #2
Tennessee has jumped to #7 RPI from #12

The win moves the Vols into top-100 schedule wise (#97)

Oklahoma State was the prior high RPI and currently sits at #26. They went 1-1 midweek against Winthrop (#161) had have dropped from #16
Arizona is at #51 but has jumped 14 spots (#65) since 3/2. They were #211 the week before.

The Bonnies (this weekend's opponent) sit at a surprising #66 in RPI after being #46 on Sunday night. Not sure why a loss to #8 RPI Vanderbilt would drop them 20 spots.

Bonaventure's best win (RPI wise) is over #110 UTM on Sunday. The Bonnies swept through a tourney at MTSU 3-0 (ODU, MTSU, UTM) as they even run ruled the host on Saturday

Florida is #10 RPI (down from #6) as their midweek struggles from 2024 have continued into 2025. The Gators play 0-6 Harvard in weekend series and play at #5 FSU on Tuesday. They may be sitting at about 12-15 next weekend.
