Tuesday will mark the first meeting between UT and West Georgia. The Wolves are in their first season as a Division I program following their move into the Atlantic Sun Conference.
With its series sweep of St. Bonaventure over the weekend, Tennessee improved to 16-0 on the year, marking the most consecutive wins to start a season in program history, surpassing the 2019 team's 15-0 start.
Long win streaks to start a season have become commonplace under head coach Tony Vitello. UT's undefeated start this season marks the third time since 2019 that it has started the year with a double-digit win streak. The Vols won their first 13 games in 2020, a year after setting a then program record by winning their first 15 games in 2019.
Highlighting Last Week's Historic Performances
The Vols had a pair of historic performances during last week's 5-0 showing. Tennessee started the week with a 22-9 midweek win over Radford in which it tied the NCAA single-game record with three grand slams, doing so in just seven innings. The Big Orange blasted two grand slams in an 11-run seventh inning, which also tied an NCAA record. UT is more than halfway to the NCAA single-season record for grand slams with eight through just 16 games this year. Arizona State holds the current record with 14 in 2003.
Tennessee's pitching staff stole the show in Friday's series-opening 12-0 victory over St. Bonaventure as five pitchers combined to throw the program's ninth no-hitter. Prior to Friday, the last no-hitter in UT baseball history was a solo effort from Jeffery Terrell on Feb. 15, 2002, in a 5-0 victory over Bowling Green. The Vols' last combined no-hitter also featured five pitchers (Kurt Scott, Brad Love, Logan Brummitt, Marlyn Tisdale, Brandon Crowe) as the Big Orange defeated the College of Charleston, 14-1, on Feb. 21, 2000, in Charleston, South Carolina.
SEC Weekly Honors for Doyle and Clark
Liam Doyle and Levi Clark both took home SEC honors on Monday afternoon after being named pitcher of the week and co-freshman of the week by the league.
Doyle continued his incredible start to the season with another dominant performance in Tennessee's series-opening win over St. Bonaventure. The junior lefthander played a starring role in the ninth no-hitter in program history, tossing 5.2 shutout innings with 13 strikeouts to earn the win and improve to 3-0 on the year.
Clark put together another impressive week to cement his status as one of the nation's best freshmen so far this season. The Georgia native led all SEC freshmen with a .615 batting average for the week after going 8-for-13 with a double and a home run while driving in six runs to add to his team-leading RBI total (23).
