The Official Tennessee @ Kentucky Series Thread (Fri. 5/1 6:30PM ET SECN+) (Sat. 5/2 2PM ET SECN+) (Sun. 5/3 1PM ET SECN+)

My sister is a Gamecock and she didn’t even want to watch today. Tanner never should have hired Manieri, he was never a good fit for them. Didn’t help that his car had LSU stickers on them lol. Founders Park is a very nice stadium and there are many empty seats this year. Theyve got to do something to bring the fans back. They have all always wanted Schnall from Coastal.
Yeah, he was done after he left LSU. He should’ve stayed done, bc he did zero favors to the South Carolina program by coming back to coach. We were ready to move on from him a couple years before he finally retired. He basically admitted after year one at South Carolina that he was in way over his head. What a shame. It’s not the way I would have liked to end what was otherwise, a pretty decent career.

We would have lost the DH for the remainder of the game much like Clemson did to help hand TN the Regional in 23. Billy Amick was subbed out at 1B by the former P/DH.
Yep. Couldn’t believe it watching live. It was certainly a wtf moment. Had it worked out it would have been viewed as genius. As it turned out, not so much.

I don’t think it would have ever be considered genius unless Grice (former P/DH who replaced Amick at 1B) made some spectacular play at 1B. Putting Grice anywhere but remaining at DH was simply a horrendous coaching decision. Plus Amick‘s and Grice‘s fielding percentage were virtually identical at the time. I loved it of course because it forced Clemson to pinch hit for virtually every pitcher for the remaining 5 2/3 innings since they had no DH plus Amick’s bat removed from the lineup.

Grice hitting a walk-off dinger would have probably been sufficient.

Crazy move though:

I think you misunderstood. It’s a bit confusing….Grice was already hitting. He was acting as the DH for himself as the starting P. If he would have simply been removed as the P and NOT inserted at 1B, he would have remained the DH and would have still hit either way. By inserting Grice at 1B to replace Amick, Clemson lost the DH and Amick’s potent bat for the remainder of the game, so every P had to either hit for themselves or were PH for. Again, Grice continued to hit as he was the replacement 1B. It was a remarkably stupid decision that put Clemson in a huge competitive disadvantage for the remaining 5 2/3 innings.

The umpire also helped UT by ejecting their stud CF for making a comment to Zane Denton. UT got most of the breaks on that steamy hot evening in Clemson!

Thanks for clarifying. It wasnt an either/or situation, it was just a bone head move to replace Amick at first. No wonder he went looking in the portal.

Yes, Amick told me that he knew he was going in the portal after that evening. He was beyond ticked at BaKich. Amick fit in extremely well at TN from the very beginning—-especially with Burke and Ensley.

Ugh… sac bunt @txbo
First time in probably a decade I didn't watch a single game of a Vol series. I went to San Antonio to watch the air show with my daughters. It was awesome. I'm catching up now on YouTube.

Looks like Levi had his own air show yesterday. Walking Reece to get to him sure seems like a dumb move.

We are still laughing at anyone and everyone we feel like laughing at, bruh. What a sad-sack, baselessly faux-moralistic and shameful negavol outlook. You should become a Vols fan and enjoy life.
Been a Volfan my whole life. 62 year through ups and downs and call it like I see it. Will they make it , yes, the way they have played , no. The TRUTH is they don't play the game with heart, it takes them getting embarrassed to even play a little, let's face it the reason the sos is so high is because of the conference they play in and they are under .500 in it. They shouldn't be and that is the head coaches fault, he lost us the Georgia series himself among other games but he is who we all wanted, myself included. Can he turn it around next year, we will see maybe he can maybe not. I look at it this way if stating facts gets me called a negative I guess i am. Like I said will they yes, the way they have played the mistakes they continue to make should they, no. Why because when that starts they will not be playing mid week teams, remember Kent State, that team beat us because they are a better team than this Tennessee team. For some reason this team has not come together like it should have, first year coach , probably, very young team definitely. Team hasn't hit all year, fact, pitchers are getting worse, fact, team defense is a strength, but all year that breaks down too. Can't turn a double play because we have a first baseman playing 2nd but his bat needs to be in the lineup and even that is hit and miss, 3 home runs in one game against LSU , nothing since then. Starting pitchers are inconsistent, great one week and the next week, we'll let's just say 10 walks and 6 hit batters against Bama, not all of that was the starter but the whole staff is getting worse not better, that is bad this time of year again that goes back to the way the staff is used and that goes to the head man and the pitching coach, that is facts. Sorry this has been so long and like I said if facts make me a negavol I can take it, but facts are facts.

I think somewhere along the way the program started going downhill after the Natty , I know we’ve had highly rated recruits but they have played up to their ranking , when’s the last season our best pitcher or position player was the best at those positions , we had Moore , Burke , Tears , Dreilling that would all be our best player on this team , then we had Burns, Beam and a few other highly touted recruits that were our best pitcher and sprinkle in some really good transfers and we’re off and running to Omaha , last year was tough and this year has been worse so far , I honestly think some of these players aren’t sec caliber ,last years team was light years more talented than this one , just wait til the mlb draft and we’ll see , Tony and Frank are responsible for this roster due to the timing of them leaving , just making the tournament would be a big win for E and he’s made his fair share of mistakes but his job would have been much easier with a Doyle or Burns and a couple of legit big time bullpen arms to go to .

In the NIL era, every CWS winning team has had at least one "down" season following their National championship; some have gone at least 2-3 seasons before even making it back to the postseason, much less Omaha! LSU winning a Natty 2 out of the last 3 years is actually a very, very rare occurrence.

I used "NIL era" as a line of demarcation because the effects of NIL and the transfer portal make this era radically different from the pre-COVID/2020 era where you could keep your best players for 3-4 years

I agree we’re in a totally different era for sure , the portal makes it easy to build a roster if you hit on a lot of your targets but it also can lead to a bad season if you miss out , I think UCLA returned almost their entire starting lineup from an Omaha team and they look the part to me

UCLA had the most Returning Production of any college team. TX was 27th or 2nd in the SEC. Experience matters!

On paper this freshman class was highly rated but outside Grindlinger and Eisfelder we hadn’t seen too much on the position player side , looks like we have several freshman pitchers getting better and ready to contribute next year if they hang around , you never know what your roster is gonna look like from year to year
