The Official Tennessee @ Arkansas Fayetteville Super Regional Game 1 (Sat. June 7 5PM EDT) (ESPN)

First, Lawless should have thrown the ball to the pitcher. He'll learn.

My understanding (I used to be a catcher) ... the batter has to make an effort to get away from the play at the plate. The batter is doing this. So, if the thrown ball hits the batter or his bat, then it is not interference and the ball is alive and in play.

However, if the batter were not making an effort, and either he gets in the way of the pitcher or catcher, or the ball hits the batter or the bat, then this is batter interference. Batter is out, runner returns to third.

Again, that's my best understanding. Maybe someone with umping experience can correct me if I'm wrong.
Phillips was way late covering. The reaction time allowed him to try what he did.

Batter is safe, idk how they’d call that obstruction.. but the rules have changed so much I really can’t say for certain. Back in my day we could truck catchers after all lol
They could but would have to be very obvious. (Like vacating, looking, seeing a throw and getting in the way of the throw on purpose.) won’t get called very often.

I think this is correct because I remember a determining factor is that "the batter has to make an effort ...", and that's where you started your explanation.

You hold them accountable. How difficult is that? Technology provides the answers, and they can be graded. No one’s perfect, but consistency is an issue. It’s not rocket science.
Consistency of MLB balls and strikes has improved tremendously since they began grading the officials based on objective data.📊

Just a baseball question here. On the passed ball...

...if the catcher throws the ball at this point and leads the pitcher, and his throw hits the batter (who is moving away from the plate), what would the correct call be?
I’m not 100% but it probably depends on how the Ump interprets the actions. If he deems the batters role as unintentional and/or unavoidable, the run probably counts. If he rules that it is batter interference, then the batter is likely out and all runners return to the base they started at.

I’m assuming it comes down entirely to how the Ump interprets it.

"You hold them accountable" means nothing. And you know it. Whose standards are you going to use? Yours? lol

You have no answer to improving sports baseball officiating. Simple as that. Only complaints.

It depends on whether or not the batter is in the box and the timing of the play.

Since you ignored it up thread, I’ll repost for your illumination.

Based on the grades, post season assignments are distributed.

At least we know Liam can yell profanities at the other team's players tomorrow. Umps won't do anything. Maybe get in their head early.

So the Regional umpires were among the best of the best.
Unfortunately, I doubt the NCAA grade their officials. Not sure how the assignments are distributed. I was making reference to the MLB officials. Officiating a baseball game isn’t as easy as it may appear (Obviously not the position of our broadcast viewing officials,)

It’s not really rocket science. I’ve said this before but umps, refs, etc across sports have too much to be focusing on. Implement technology to decrease their responsibilities which should make them more effective on any responsibilities remaining.

But nah let’s just continue to let old men try and guess at balls and strikes or spotting a football 20 yards away.
