The Official Tennessee #8 Lady Vols Softball @ Missouri Series Thread (Thurs. 4/30 7:40PM ET SECN+) (Fri. 5/1 7PM ET SECN+) (Sat. 5/2 1PM ET SECN)

Don’t leave anything to a committee although in times past they have loved us. Plus Karlyn is a big draw which never hurts no matter what they may say.
My fear is the committee is salivating at paring a Texas Tech Tennessee super regional. Pickens vs Canady. And Pannell returning after the drama in the offseason

Couple of questions. Why do most softball players almost never choke up on the bat, regardless of the situation? You have better control of anything the closer your hands are to the working end ( hammer, golf club, pencil, softball bat). I did notice Knight was choked up on her rbi hit.

And why , when facing a pitcher who reliably throws 3 change ups per at bat, don't more players sit change til there are 2 strikes? I'm sure after a couple of girls hit the change the pitcher would adjust but at least you get her away from her game plan and then it's a battle of adjustment.

I’ve thought this too. Too many storylines and would assure only one pitcher going to WCWS. If we somehow have an early exit in the SECT, it’s on the table.

I think it’s on the table regardless but certainly an early exit helps it. Think the only way would be an 8-9 matchup. I don’t see them dropping tech down too far and no way we are worse than 9 imo

Karen needs to recruit offense a la Barnes.
She needs to hire a hitting coach. Someone that can look at what the hitters are struggling with and correct it. We started the season hitting lights out but we have been scouted and weaknesses found. I don't see us making adjustments. That's on the hitting coach.

and errors
I thought the errors took us out mentally today. We were sailing along, feeling good, and then WHAM! You could see how they deflated everyone and planted doubts.

Defense is easiest part of the game to improve IMO, so they better buckle down and take their practice reps super seriously, working through them with an in-game mentality instead of going through the motions which is easy to do after a long season.

I always get irritated when I’m in Food Center/ TBA watching the women’s basketball pre-game warmups. You can easily see that, for the most part, the players are just mindlessly going through the motions and putting no thought toward using the time to actually mentally prepare for game situations. It drives me nuts, and every single time I have the same thought: If this were my team I would coach pre-game. When the ball went up for tipoff we’d already be mentally ahead of it.

They are a 500 team. That is bottom feeder.
Before the game today Missouri was 39th in the RPI, and likely will move up after beating #6 in RPI Lady Vols. Do you think a top 40 RPI is a bottom feeder? I don't. However, both 2 to 1 losses to Ole Miss is what might cost UT a top 8 National seed, and what I would call a bottom feeder.

Errors. Errors. Fielding errors. Did any of you see the stat which TV showed saying generally if LV score three runs that they have won more tha 90% ( or so) of their games under Karen and Ralph. I watched every minute of all three games.

You could see the instant effect on Karlyn face of the error that was the back breaker. Without that last error the Game should have been over right there as a win for the LV. Fielding errors

Tennessee's ERA leads NCAA at 1.30. Individually, Mardjetko is number 2 nationally at .92 with Pickens number 10 at 1.48. That's national championship level.
Hitting is another matter. OK leads NC
AA stats with a .421 team batting. FL is number 5 at .373. Duke 10 at .353. Western Carolina checks in at number 50 with a team average of .321.
Lady Vols paltry .301 team batting is neither national nor SEC championship level. Only one LV player, Knight at .421, hits better than OK's TEAM. Only Knight, Leach and Dodge, hit better than number 10 Duke's .353.
It is much more than just "timely hitting," in my opinion. It has been the Achilles heel of the Lady Vol's program for years.
The question I have is. Are our hitters being undercoached or perhaps overcoached, if that makes sense?

That’s exactly what I saw, too.
