The Official LSU @ Tennessee Series Thread (Fri. 4/3 5:30PM ET SECN) (Sat. 4/4 6PM ET ESPN2) (Sun. 4/5 1PM ET SECN+)

If you would have told me Florida, who’s coach took a lengthy leave in the offseason and lost his top assistant (to us) would be this much further ahead than us I’d call you insane. I went to our fall scrimmage in Chattanooga and was blown away by our young talent in the lineup. What in the heck has happened to our damn mojo?!?!

Why didn’t we scrimmage other teams like previous seasons?

Not sure the offense is going to turn around like I hoped.

LSU will be the weakest pitching staff we face the rest of the season and the Vols could not string hits together against them.

I had hopes we could turn around like the Maiu Ahuna season when the coaches were able to get the team to rise above some bad attitudes. There's a lot of insanity on the team as they continue to approach their at-bats with the same bad plan every single time. I am sure the coaches are giving them good tips, advise and training but at game time, the lights come on and we're hacking away at every ball in the dirt because the guys think they are GREAT low ball hitters because of what they did in high school or travel ball.

Right now, even LSU pitchers know to keep the ball at ankle level and they'll get us to hack away. Or, play a hard shift and we'll hit into nearly every time, especially with a runner on base.

I don't really blame pitching. The stats looks bad as nearly every guy has had one really bad outing. There is one guy that comes into the game that causes me turn off the TV or go to concession stand but that's it. I thought Arvidson was very reliable until his Friday night hiccup and he came back and did better on Sunday.

At this point I’m not sure what anybody wants E to do , he could play some different guys I kinda agree with that but the bullpen is a dumpster fire that Bobby Cox couldn’t manage and Tony himself was heavily involved in this new revamped bullpen for this season , that looks like a major blunder and missing out on the two other big bats from the portal has hurt since our offense has been almost as bad , we literally have half or more of the lineup going hitless or 1 hit in a weekend , I agee 100% E has made some bad decisions but at some point the players need to look in the mirror and take some ownership too , we have 4 that’s right 4 reliable sec pitchers and your not winning to often with that

They were going against our bullpen arms 😂

Speaking of the bullpen and coaching 😉, why are we not sending two guys to warm up when it's nearing time for a reliever?
If the first reliever doesn't have it that day, you've got another arm warming up and ready to go.
Instead of leaving the guy out there that doesn't have it today to load the bases.

The trend has been to not warm guys up and not bring em in , about everyone these days will just get 1 guy ready in college and pro ball , years ago once you went to the pen it was double barrel action pretty much til the game ended , protecting these kids arms is a big deal

That is not true for the previous years or for Jay's teams. Frank had 2-3 guys warming up in different levels when we were getting ready to make a move. One was throwing, one was getting ready, and one was getting hot. Then they would move to hot hot and getting hot and getting ready. He was thinking 2-3 steps ahead of the situation we were in. Once we got to the fourth inning of every game Kirby and different people each year were out there read to warm up. Not because he's mine but we don't have the crafty lefty this year. We have to go get one or two for the coming years. The one they thought would be is not ready.

To add to that, every program in college baseball now has agents layered into protecting their arms, pitch counts, etc.

[Note for the drive bys- this isn't unique to UT or any specific player on our roster before someone wants to run with that. Its endemic throughout the game now]

😂 drive-bys that's rich.Read the message just above yours.

Our baseball team sucks and I don’t agree with a lot of Elander’s decisions. However, I like him and I hope he gets another year to figure it out if this season continues going down the toilet. My biggest concern with him is that it doesn’t seem like he has a good feel for the game and often times I’ve wondered if he’s paying attention. There’s been several crucial moments where the camera has turned to him and he’s talking to other coaches instead of watching his players’ body language. Communication is obviously important but did anyone in the dugout even see Landon Mack grab his oblique yesterday before running the count to 3-0? Our catcher had to force Elander to send someone out to check on him. Maybe I’m an idiot but I don’t see how anyone can effectively manage a team when they are constantly turning away from what’s happening on the field to chat with other coaches.
I would put that on Reynolds, the pitching coach, for not noticing Mack if he was indeed hurt

Ok, and? We responded one minute apart.

Not to mention the drive bys comment wasn't even directed at what PM20 was talking about, I was just adding color to the post I quoted.

I’m still mad about this series…I need Rick to go gangster on some people in the portal

Looked at the numbers for this weekend. TN hit .257 in the opener loss, then a smoking .103 in the win and .125 in the last game. I can't remember a team this bad at the plate.

Just looked at our updated sec stats , .227 team ba , not one player hitting over 300 Grimmer leads at .279 , team era is near 5.5 I thought it would be a bit higher but our starters and Appenzeller have been pretty good , bad offense and no bullpen is a recipe to be 4-8 , Josh is gonna have to change our approach , our discipline is awful and we chase way too many bad pitches , we’ve had numerous innings that we’ve seen 6 pitches , it’s ok to swing at pitches you can do damage with early in the count but it’s kinda stupid to continue to swing at dirt balls and high fastballs that lead to little league pop ups , we’re a free swinging bunch that has a bad knowledge of the strike zone , we looked better in our first sec series at Ga than we do now , it’s hard to imagine our hitting can get much worse , looking at the pen I believe we let better pitchers leave than we currently have , Loy , Sharman , Crabtree just to name a few and there was a bunch of em transferred

I looked at this as an improvement opp so I watched closer yesterday. Looked like that was happening yesterday. At one point late there were at least 4 guys warming up or getting loose.

Oh man, I know there’s nothing I can say here that’s going to make that feeling of disgust go away. I’ve been there. Hell, I’ve been there a few times this season already. The “bad” was obvious, and no need for me to say much. You have a pen problem right now, and it’s up to your coaches to get that fixed. Hitting is inconsistent, and that’s fixable as well. But, there were a lot of positives from the Vols this weekend that the team can build upon.

Your starting pitching this weekend was really good. Appenzeller (sp??) was outstanding in relief yesterday. Completely shut LSU down yesterday. Arvidson was good today as well. Grimmer is a beast at the plate, and it was good to see Brown break out of a mini slump with the slam today.

Today is not as bad as it looks. Y’all simply ran out of pitching…. in the 12th, on a Sunday, in a rubber match. It’s college ball, and that’s going happen more often than not for most college teams in that same situation. And, LSU had one dude (Arrambide) hit 4 dingers, including a slam, that accounted for 7 runs! That just almost never happens! But, y’all still showed fight in the 11th to tie it up, and get to the 12th. Y’all have competed with everyone this season so far, and have had some extremely close losses. The final score does not accurately sum up the effort that the Vols gave today.

I know none of of this makes anybody feel any better. But, you’re all good people, good fans, and y’all love your team. So, just stick with them! Good times are still to come. Happy Easter my friends, and God bless.
You’re a good man. Thanks for the perspective and well wishes.

I’ve heard the NIL, even from him. My question is how do older guys with actual families handle it and keep going? DVH has a daycare’s worth of grandkids yet he isn’t running from it. Mingione seems to be one of the biggest family guy coaches around and manages it. The guy with zero family at home grew tired of it and ran from it; how/why?
The Giants came calling with HOF Buster Posey closing the deal. The door was cracked open due to reasons mentioned but Posey was getting Vitello come hades or high water.

I never understood that either. Really odd that TM was selling an exhibition game (I forget the team) in Nashville that was never announced by TN. It ended up being changed to an intrasquad but was eventually cancelled due to weather.

And he didn’t know the rule.
I don't think it was not knowing the rule it was an interpretation of the rule. I believe he was arguing that it was not a play from home to first so he did not have to stay in the running lane. The play was made from way up the line which should negate the running lane rule. It only applies to plays made from the home plate area. He is also known for getting ejected to try to fire up his guys. You could see how they treated him that they respected his attempt.

He was definitely arguing the application. He knew the rule…
