The Official Countdown To Tennessee Football 2025 (37 Days) (Sat. Aug 30 Syracuse)

54 Days!
#54 Dale Jones was a standout linebacker for the Tennessee Volunteers from 1983 to 1986. A two-time All-SEC selection and All-American, he is best remembered as the defensive leader of the 1985 team that captured the SEC championship and dominated No. 2 Miami with a 35-7 victory in the 1986 Sugar Bowl.

One of my favorite plays! What a comeback in Athens. I still get excited just seeing that photo. I should rewatch that game before the season starts. That play also made the cover of Sports Illustrated. Apparently because (similar to their famous cover of Tony Robinson beating #1 Auburn) they were holding the cover, this time for a story about unbeaten Georgia running away with the game. And the Vols blew that up. Again.

Tennessee debuted its all-orange uniforms for the first time on November 26, 1977, in a matchup against Vanderbilt.

The Vols capped Johnny Majors’ first season with a dominant 42-7 win over the Commodores at Neyland Stadium.

Jimmy Streater in for the score

Tennessee was a 13-point underdog against Alabama at Legion Field in 1983. The Vols trailed by multiple scores twice in the second half. The Vols won, 41-34.

Even now I can close my eyes and see Johnnie Jones taking that pitch out and turning the corner for a 66 yard TD run...how beautiful it was. The two big catches by Duncan 80 yard TD and a 57 yard TD...too sweet to forget
