He really is a smart kid, especially math. He'll be a freshman and will take some dual enrollment classes starting this year at a local CC. If nothing else it will boost his gpa. There's a local university that offers a trade path along with a 2yr degree. It's private and not cheap but we've planned for it. Kid could be making bank at 20yo. But if he decides to go to college we've also made sure he will have the grades and scores to get in. The state of FL really has a good scholarships program set up
Good plan. TN has that stuff too. First two years free whether CC or trade school. Just wasn't as proactive as he could have been getting started. On up into the mid 20's on two segments but low in another. Tried to tell him to keep taking every cycle and they'd keep the highest marks overall and he could get up up into high 20's. I'm like son, you played football, baseball got over a 3.0. Just get your ACT in mid to upper 20's and you'll never pay a dime for college. Never would retake it. Very intelligent, but knew everything. Guess that's how it goes. Sometimes they don't exercise all the smarts cause they think it'll just happen. When he figured it all out he started making Dean's list in Chem, and is on his second ASMS Conference trip presenting his research he does for his professor. And here I am looking at his big poster printout of his reasearch process and conclusions with crossed eyes and scambled brains. lol.

Oh for sure, I just have to figure out what I want to do when I grow up lol.

Most installations have colleges on post. Columbia College (MO) is one. That's where I got my first Associates. Embry-Riddle, Central Texas College (CTC) and University of Maryland Global Campus are some others.

Austin Peay has a campus building separate from the education services building on Fort Campbell.

Fort Benning has Columbus State University (part of the USG), Embry-Riddle, Troy University, as well as CTC.

I wouldn't recommend AMU or similar schools.
I really wanted to do the 20 years, let them educate me, go to OCS, retire around 40 with officer pension, then do something else and cruise into old age on two pensions. But, athletic as I was, I would sometimes have blackout struggles if I got really hot an cooled off really quick. Happened in football tryouts once, and twice in track practice. So, I kinda lost the desire to hit basic training. Figured if that happened they'd send me home. Almost went to the AF recruiter. Figured it would be hte easiest and only lasted 6 weeks back then. Sister had a bf in HS that went AF and he let them put him thru med school and did his commitment as a doctor.

There's some videos of current UCLA students that can't read a basic sentence.
Now, I woulda guessed places like Troy, Ga Southern, etc. But, UCLA? Had to be athletes. What my wife goes thru at the middle school though is mind boggling. And it's the generation of parents of these kids. It's hopeless and irresponsible. And its the school systems. One of hte assistant principals is a klepto and has been arrested for it, it's very public, and she has conferences with parents about their kids. It's the state of american ed. Horrible.

I have pins in my shoulder from football at 16.

I had knee surgery about 8 weeks before leaving for basic. They’ll waive a lot lol

Schools were one of the top priorities we looked at when purchasing our house.

Maybe now, but i'm talking mid-80's boot camps before they started cracking down on it. You had to be seriously messed up to go marine back then. AF was still hte easy way n though by boot camp reputation. Army/Navy had about hte same rep in our circles back then. Marine was not for normal people.

MY BIL has pins for same. Was being recruited by Miss St and Ole Miss his jr. year. Broke his collar bone and ended all that. Still has lead shot in his body too. He and his brother were out squirrell hunting. Brother was walking down dirt road marching like he was playing army toward BIL. BIL hollared at him, like bro what you doing? Brother just lowered shotgun and pelted him. It's funny now to here them both telling that story, but he's lucky he didn't die from that trance his bro was in.

I do.

We live in Coweta County.
Coweta is Newnan? Good choice. These days it's up there with PTC, but more affordable. Bout same distance out cost wise, but Griffin would have been bad. Hampton/Eagles Landing areas better but ya'll made right decision. Newnan used to be on par with Griffin in my day, but they kinda hitched on the the PTC model and got good all aorund.

so...Northgate??

Anyone else have dreams/nightmares that they didn't finish and have to go back? "We made a mistake and you never graduated. You must take more classes!"
Sometimes I have to uncork the tube and look at it. I was playing in bands and school was a low priority at the time. I skated by and got my Finance degree.
My Dad wanted to see me walk and I stubbornly opposed. That's probably a top 3 regret in my life.

Correct. Newnan is great, still growing. We've only been here since '21.

The elementary, middle and HS we fall in are the best in the county.

I think it was Newnan HS when I was in HS that was dirty as crap in football. Griffin was always state champs in track nearly every year then. And they all played FB too. Super fast football team. You'd be in the fall droughts and we'd be playing over there and the field is soaking wet and muddy, but everything around dry as a bone. they'd run sprinklers for like two days on hte field before our games to slow us down. Come to think of it, that might have been LaGrange.

Nope. After grad school I swore I'd never read another book. And except for Max Lucado I've read very few cover to cover on a consistent basis.

I do have same regrets on walking though. Was a semester behind on my BA and graduated in Dec. Since most of my class and firends already packed out, I just left and took diploma in the mail. Same with MBA. Dec grad, but this time a semester early. Was already married and went immediately back to GA job hunting. So, lot's of work, two degrees and never walked. Wish I had now. But, I don't sweat over it.

I didn't walk for my Associates. I walked for my BS and MBA. Mostly to show my girls that you can accomplish what you set out for at any age. I plan to walk for my Doctorate next year as well.

I actually enjoy reading, just not what I'm told to lol.

BA in Sociology (worthless major) from UT in 1999

JD from Thomas Jefferson SOL (worthless law school) in 2004

Passed the bar exam on my first attempt, despite the worthless major and law school

What you get your degree in and where you go to school doesn’t really matter. If you are a hard worker and street smart you can do just fine, even if you don’t even go to college.

Trade schools are also a great alternative for folks to make a good living. There is a shortage of trade workers now, so they can make some really good money.
Pssh. I passed the bar exam at Boys State in HS.

*Yes, I still have the certificate. I was also elected Sheriff for my County.

That's exactly what they've said.

I'm just in a weird spot. I have over 17 years of varying leadership and operations experience (it's transferring the skills over to the civilian market), but I've also only had my degrees since this past March (MBA) and '24 (BSGS).

The good news is that I'm not hurting for a job. I'm just not all that pleased with where I am. Hell, I made more money with only a HS diploma lol slinging cars.

Thankfully I've found some very good organizations that are designed to help veterans network (it's about who you know, not what you know).
A new college degree is just the beginning. OJT is where the education comes in handy. You don't know what someone who has been working there for 5 years knows. It help if your degree is a profession with a professional designation. i.e. Accounting (CPA), PE, Professional Engineer. It takes time for the experience and to take the test.
I always did very good at jobs. At least excellent reviews. Just never happywith large corporation or govt. Had to go to work for myself at age 33. That was scary.
Can you make good money selling cars? BMW, Mercedes or Lexus pay better than Chevy, Ford? Do some sales people build a client base of customers who will call again in 2-3 years for another car?
OTOH, I haven't wroked for 10-12 years. I might be outta touch?
