The Official #9 Tennessee vs. #1 Alabama Game Thread, 3:30 pm ET, CBS

There are only 2 teams this caliber this year, Ala. and Ohio St. Clemson does not look that tough this year and when their QB leaves they will fade away. Until Saban and Urban dies this is it

Ohio state has trailed Wisconsin most of the game and badgers just scored go ahead touchdown again.. I don't think anyone can play with the crimson turds at this time. They are one click above everyone else.

Mahoney is garbage and we all knew it, but we all hoped DeBord could fix it. Problem is, we haven't recruited well enough at OT to deal with any injuries. You add to that the fact our OL isn't being coached up and you have a disaster in your hands. I'm sorry, but why would you put Tatum out there? What's that kid weigh, 270? I'd put Austin Sanders in before I put a true freshman in that lacks about 50 pounds.

Butch asked for this. He refused to let someone take over the offense and we are paying for it. We don't have a QB coach, it's showing. Our OL coach sucks, it's showing. We don't utilize talent properly, aka Evan Berry, Byrd, JJ, and Kamara, it's showing. Offense is just a complete disaster right now, especially the OL.

In terms of defense, this is why so many people won't get on the Jumper and Berry train. Guys, I love all of you as VOLS fans, but some of you have the madden effect where you get so excited you just want to throw players out there because they were higher rated recruits or because they have a specific name on their back. Jumper and Berry are special teams players and locker room role models. You love them for their effort, but you don't play them against Bama, etc because they will get you routed. Our LB play is killing us. Those QB runs are mostly due to bad LB play. Bama has great OL players so they know how to angle DL out of plays, which leaves LBs and S having to make the play. Galuden 1 on 1 can make plays, but Berry and Jumper don't have enough speed or they take bad angles. Multiple TDs today came because our LBs were out of position. It's just mental errors by players who shouldn't be on the field. I love my boys, but it's just the harsh reality.
You are spot on. Showed it on replay after G.Danielson,(CBS), called it.Showed Jumper telling Berry to move more inside on play Hurts ran for long score and several more times Berry bit on inside fake. UT has had trouble all year on mis-direction plays. Bad thing is they have been here 2 yrs. at least. Not learning anything it seems. They make good plays at times but as a unit they are lacking and it's because they are out of position over and over and give up big plays. Not sure what the remedy is but need at least one good back-up for every starter in defensive backfield.

Injuries definitely hurt but giving up 400 yards rushing and about 130 of those on the same QB keeper play to the right is just not very impressive.
you'd think a safety could have seen that play developing.they were running at berry knowing he was 3rd string. i thought that was what safeties were for.

I'll go on record right now and say that as long as Saban is at Alabama, Butch Jones will never beat him. Not with this offensive scheme.
i'll go on record with ya. our OL doesn't have season ending injuries yet and if they are healed and playing and UT makes it to atlanta on Dec. 3 jones will beat saban then provided both teams make it there.

I think talent matters in these cases. Inexperience leads to mental errors, but talent can mask them. Berry and Jumper don't posses the athletism to make up for mental errors. Jumper usually is solid against the run, but he gets lost sometimes in the passing game. Berry isn't reading his gap assignments very well.

The whole reason Jumper plays is because of the reason you just mentioned, i.e. he's smart enough to align gap assignments to others like a MLB usually does in game. Currently, our biggest problem is the miscommunication between S and LBs in terms of man assignments during man coverage. Everyone go back and watch the last games where we get beat deep. 9 times out of 10 its a S misangling the ball projection/missing the assignment all together, a OLB missing an assignment/not creating contact at the line, or it's Foreman getting beat deep 1 on 1 in the slot. In zone, we have some issues with guys not making contact at the line and playing way off players on slants towards the middle of the field, but the playing off most likely has to do with preventing huge plays. Still, when it's 3rd and 10 you have to force the receiver in front of you to cut quicker than expected by jamming him at the line and preventing him from getting to the first down marker in time.

Due to the injuries (Sutton), during one on one plays, Buchanan has to be covered/shaded by a S deep usually. Him going 1 on 1 with experienced WRs isn't good for us, go review the A&M game the moment he entered the game. That means everyone else must play their assignment, especially if it's cover one. Another issue is, and it's one of the few complaints I have on Shoop, is that he keeps getting TKJr in 1 on 1 situations with WRs. That's not what we want. We want him in zone or shading a WR deep. He's a ballhawk in zone coverage, but he's not the best cover S in 1 on 1 situations. Lastly, and this is 100% opinion, I think it's time to start looking at some new guys on running downs when we play DT QBs. I think it's time we experiment some more with Taylor and Phillips at DE, Kongbo and KMAC at DT, Bituli and Jumper at LB, at Gaulden a NB. I think this lineup gives us youth for the future, but it also puts some very good athletes across the DL. I also love what I've seen, the little of, from Bituli, and I think Gaulden is a solid run NB and one of our best tacklers on our team.

Now, obviously I'm not saying we should start all these guys, but I think it's a sub-package that can provide us the ability to set the edge better when playing against DT QBs. We can also use the package and move DB inside in place of Kongbo to keep him on the field if desired. I just think we need a package to help rest guys like DB, Shy, etc without getting us killed on the ground when they are out of the game.

On the bright side, when Alabama's kick sailed wide right, Aaron Medley sent her straight through the uprights for the field goal.

No offense but have you watched this game? We have injuries for sure but this team has not been handled well on offense all season long, we just had better talent to make up for/come from behind.

Or defensive issues have been due to injuries, but our offense has been playcalling compounded by injuries. We have serious issues on offense.

? How does that prove we just lost recruits?

We have 3.5 seasons of Mahoney coached oline film to study. He hasn't been able to field an SEC caliber starting oline yet, what makes you think he will be able to next year?

Not suggesting he will, but it is speculation because we don't have a 5 star OL to test your opinion.

You're saying that with the mentality that UT wins out the rest of the year. What if they drop another game or two?

This is what I was talking about three weeks ago. The season isn't over and I'm telling you guys Kentucky & Vanderbilt won't be cakewalks for how this team is playing.
