The Official #21 Tennessee vs. Florida A&M Game Thread, 7:00 PM ET, SEC Network

I think he is better there, that’s my reasoning...his ball handling and shooting are still not where they need to be to play more of a perimeter spot imo. If he continues to improve that area hen maybe, at worst he’s a guy that can probably play either spot, I just think he’s been much better at the 4

Yeah I don't disagree there, but through the first few games his shooting looks better. If he can get more comfortable handling the ball I think long term he'll project professionally as a 3. So ideally that'd be where ya'd want to see him playing in college.

So college ball he can play 4 or 3, and has been doing better as a 4. Feel like he needs to get better with his dribbling this season/next if he's got a legit shot at playing in the NBA...so maybe that's why I'd like to see him doing well enough in those area (shooting & dribbling) to be playing the 3 next year, since I feel that's his best chance at making it into the league.

So he can’t do that as a 3?

James is out rebounding him and the same height should he be moved to the 4 now. You can just say “I’d rather Pons stay at the 4” you’re welcome to prefer him at that spot. I just like the potential to have more size on the court and think Pons sliding back to the 3 allows that to happen while keeping his production in the lineup.
Pons currently struggles at the 3. His handles are not good. Doesn't matter how tall you are, how high you can jump or how good you shoot the ball, if you can't get to spots off the dribble in this league then you are not going to be productive at the 1,2 or 3 spots and by not having handles you actually will hurt the team at those spots.

Sickness for sure, just think unless Jalen does something this season Barnes will want that experience Pons has on the court with the youthful guards.

If Vescovi gets eligible & plays quality minutes this season he might feel comfortable with James/Vescovi running point. And roll in Gaines/Bailey/Springer/Johnson to play the 2/3 and keep Pons at the 4.

I just think you’ll wanna have 2 bigs on the court as much as possible if you have the bodies to do it.
Vescovi is not going to get here in Jan and all of a sudden get quality minutes, I don't think he'll play much at all this year.

Disagree with ya, doubt Barnes & Vescovi would be working for January eligibility if the plan wasn’t for him to contribute.

He should be the 2nd best PG on the team once he’s up to speed, he actually may be the best pure PG on the team even.

He'll play some and the only reason Barnes is pushing for him to get here now is because we are low on numbers THIS season. He may get here and not be close to ready to play in this strong of a league as well. If JJJ is struggling some at the point I suspect he will too.

What’s the downside to him getting here in January? You get him off the market for other teams to try and poach him come spring, and he gets to practice with the team and workout 6 months ahead of the rest of the class.

If he plays, he only gets 3.5 years here. That’s really the only downside (and not really a big deal if he is good enough to contribute this season)

Didn't say anything about a downside.

If he's not ruled eligible I assume it's treated much like an early enrollee in football? Or does he end up a redshirt for 2019-20 season and would begin the 2020-21 season as a RS-Freshman (with 4 full years)?

But he can come and redshirt, that’s my point...it’s not a forgone conclusion that just because they’re bringing him in means he’s all of a sudden a big minute guy.

Correct, redshirt and have 4 years. My point was that just because Barnes is trying to get him here ASAP doesn’t mean they plan on him contributing this year, there’s quite a few other reasons to bring him in ASAP.

Yea I agree. As I said, if he does play, that probably means he is ready to contribute and wouldn’t need the redshirt.

Even with the redshirt though, he loses 1 summer / fall, but I think it will be worth it to get him in earlier rather than later.

Yeah agreed. I just don't think we've got a great true PG situation right now.

But Turner and James both can improve as the season progresses. Would be good to get a semester in and get up to speed on all things NCAA College Basketball for the young man.

How would he lose a summer/fall with the redshirt versus coming and playing next fall with no redshirt?

No versus coming in next summer and redshirting his freshman year.

These very minor downsides in no way outweigh the benefits of getting him here earlier.

Was just listing the few minor downsides.

If he comes in with the game to get minutes and contribute right away, it’s hard to imagine anybody’s ego being okay with redshirting after that. Jmo

I see no chance he redshirts next year though, other than injury.

Obviously, not very likely that he would redshirt next year.

Wasn't saying what is likely to happen, was just explaining the cases where him coming this season could be seen as a downside.

As I said, the positives far outweigh the small downside that he will lose some eligibility overall (1 semester).

Anyone know the answer to this? If he gets into school in January and doesn’t play in any game this season, will he have the normal 5 years to play 4 starting next season? Would it matter whether he was ruled eligible or not for this season?

He would have 4 to play 4, he would use his redshirt for the spring semester.

So the early enrolling only applies to football....that doesn’t seem fair but then again it’s the NCAA
