The Official #20 Tennessee @ Vanderbilt Series Thread (3/27 8PM ET ESPNU) (3/28 2PM ET SEC Network) (3/29 Noon ET ESPN2)

I'm here. I'm alive.

I have to admit to something bad.

I changed the channel after Krenzel threw 2 or 3 pitches. I saw UGA flashbacks and I admit I read the HBP and HR after the fact. I was actually concerned with Brayden came into the Upstate game in the high pressure situation.

This weekend was a real team effort. Two games of no clutch hitting and one game of complete bullpen busting. Tennessee should have won Sunday by double digit runs and Corbin likely suspected we would.

This feels like a really bad midweek loss. Vanderbilt sold their pitching soul to win their Saturday game and we still lost the Sunday game.

I'm not doing rankings this week. After the basketball, baseball, Predators, and White Sox weekend I'm going to do something positive. Read about politics or something.

With Elander’s heavy analytical approach, I have no idea. Seems that Bates 4 for 8 in midweek hasn’t earned him any opportunities in SEC play despite playing the position that has been an offensive black hole.
I will say that E doesn’t need to be heads down charting plays like some analyst. He needs to be “heads up” taking in the game and engaging with coaches, players, and….the occasional umpire. He’s the CEO of the program and needs to delegate 3B coaching and play charting to underlings IMHO.
Elander mentioned the other day in a interview that he wanted to keep things as normal as possible for the team (and honestly probably himself) since the change was made so close to the season and that’s why he’s at 3rd. I think the whole “he needs to be in the dugout” thing is way overblown, just me personally.

I do think he’ll be in the dugout next year though

This team is young. They have taken on the persona of the coach like our teams in the past did. Vitello=Full of energy, passion and communicated with his players all the time. If it looked like you didn't have his passion to win he let you know about it. Josh=Laid back and I haven't seen him talking to his players hardly at all. Hasn't thrown stuff or thrown a fit yet. Calm, little demeanor and his team shows the same traits. Bad women's basketball team. Men's team did well this year except for today. Terrible baseball team. The stage is now set for a disappointing mediocre football team. That would fall right in line with what UT sports has became.
How many coaches in the country do you see throwing stuff and yelling at everyone?

CTV was an outlier for that and expecting Elander to be the same way has absolutely no dictation on how the players perform on the field.

I think it goes back to this simple fact: Tony, Elander, Frank etc all bet on this rising sophomore class to take a huge leap and it didn’t happen. Unfortunately for E, he’s taking the blame for it

The bet was placed for 2027… therein lies the patience. Steady as she goes…. Just make the tournament this year. The balance is gravy.

The head down charting every play bothers me more than him being at 3B coaching. He should have someone else charting the play by play so he can focus on the big picture. They have plenty of folks who can chart plays—just one head coach.

That’s fair

I think that’s a pretty common thing for coaches to do and if we were winning no one would care at all.

I’m confident he’ll learn from a lot of his mistakes this year. Just a bad combination of a super young team with a super young coach

Yesterday’s loss was worse than Ga just for the simple reason you made the same mistake again , momentum is college baseball is real , you can’t give an inch or it’ll bite you in the butt

This^^^. They went to the portal and filled in needs based on the the sophomore class taking the next step and at this point none of them have become the players they need to be. I think we will see a total rebuild of this roster at the end of this season.

I believe a couple of those guys are draft eligible & they were expecting most likely gone after this year. Not sure many are draft worthy right now.

It’s going to be much harder to recruit now. No CTV and a young coach likely coming off a bad season.

Have you ever seen a head coach tracking plays during an in game interview? I’ve never and think he’s making a mistake many executives do in the business world. When promoted, there are some less strategic roles or tasks that you have to delegate to a subordinate, so you can focus on more big picture, strategic responsibilities. I don’t think Elander has done that yet, and it’s hurting his game management.

I've never managed a college baseball team but I do know that data input is never the best use of a CEO's time.

I will admit I'm not a huge analytics guy. I believe they are a tool. I am a number's guy in the fact that I want to know what pitch we threw against them last time and what they did, that is more charting for me than analytics. I believe in today's world there is too much emphasis put on spin rate for pitchers rather than pitching and bat speed for hitters rather than results. Those numbers are important for recruiting but don't tell the picture. You can have a high spin rate but if you can't throw it where you want you are dead. You can have a great bat speed but if you can't read pitches and hit the offspeed stuff you are just striking out swinging fast. I want results. I look more at on base than anything for a batter and era for a pitcher. If you get on, I don't care how. If you keep your era down, that is all that matters. You can't control what happens behind you as a pitcher.

Taking into consideration the revenue being poured into the facilities, one would think Danny to have a short leash with Elander. He gave him a chance. If next season the progress is bleak I think he has to make a move for a proven head coach.

I saw a tweet that in the first three weeks of the conference season, ten teams have already been swept. Only one team has been swept twice. Seven of the eight series this pass weekend were sweeps.

Alabama at Kentucky
Arkansas home vs. Florida
Auburn at Alabama
Florida at Alabama
Missouri home vs. Auburn
Oklahoma at Texas
Ole Miss at Miss State
South Carolina (2) at Florida / at Georgia
Tennessee at Vanderbilt
Vanderbilt at Miss State

This makes me feel a little better (I guess). Two of the teams were swept at home.
LSU has gone 1-2 in three straight series (last two at home) with road series upcoming at Tennessee and Ole Miss and upcoming series at Miss State and Georgia. Gotta believe they'll be number 11.

Some on this list has only road series.

Frustratingly, Tennessee has lost 3 or 4 SEC games that any sort of offense would have won and 2 others that we choked away late on the mound.

Vols must win the upcoming home series with LSU and Ole Miss and win a game in Starkville. I have to believe (like 2023) the offense will wake up.
