ATHENS, Ga. – Conference play has arrived as No. 19/19 Tennessee begins its 10-week SEC grind with a trip to Athens this weekend to take on No. 6/8 Georgia at Foley Field.

The Vols have won seven of their last eight games entering league play and are coming off their best offensive performance of the year after throttling Tennessee Tech, 20-2, in Tuesday's midweek affair.

The Big Orange blasted five home runs – including a pair of grand slams – and finished with a season-high 17 hits against the Golden Eagles.

UT has relied heavily on its pitching staff so far this season, which ranks 16th nationally in ERA (3.10) and eighth in the country in WHIP (1.05). That staff will be put to the test this weekend against the Bulldogs' high-powered attack that ranks among the top five in the nation in batting average (.353) and runs per game (11.4) while leading all of Division I with 61 home runs.

Kalen Frady (PxP) and Brett DeLoach (analyst) will call the games on Friday and Sunday on SEC Network+ and the ESPN app, while Richard Cross and Gregg Olson will be on the call for Saturday's contest, which will be televised on the SEC Network.

NOTABLE

SEC Opening Weekend
The Vols will be looking to notch their fourth series win on SEC Opening Weekend since Elander joined the staff in 2018 after taking two of three at Georgia in 2021, sweeping South Carolina at home in 2022 and sweeping Florida at home last season.

Tennessee is 13-17 in SEC openers on the road since 1980 and 36-46 overall in SEC openers.

Bullpen Brilliance
UT's reworked bullpen has proven to be a major strength of the team up to this point in the season, having posted an 8-0 record and 3.51 ERA with 89 strikeouts while holding opposing hitters to a .208 batting average in 74.1 innings of work.

Over the last eight games, Tennessee's relievers have posted a 5-0 record and a 1.88 ERA with 50 strikeouts and just nine walks in 38.1 innings of work.

Ford Leading Offensive Charge
Highly touted transfer portal addition Henry Fordhas lived up to the billing so far this season. Entering this weekend, Ford leads the team in batting average (.380), runs (17), hits (27), homers (6), RBIs (20), total bases (49) and OPS (1.126). His 27 hits are tied for fifth in the SEC.

The junior third baseman has a hit in nine straight games entering this weekend and has driven in runs in seven of his last nine games, including a two-run blast in the fifth inning of last Saturday's series-clinching win over Wright State and a three-hit, five-RBI performance in Tuesday's midweek win over Tennessee Tech. Ford's nine multi-hit games are four more then the next closest players on the team (Reese Chapman & Blaine Brown - 5).

Winning the Close Ones
The Vols been exceptional in close games so far this season, having posted a 5-1 record in contests decided by two runs or less. UT posted a pair of one-run victories last weekend against Wright State after winning back-to-back games against Arizona State and Virginia Tech by two runs the previous weekend.

We got to go in there with guns a blazing and take it to them. Gotta a feeling our bats will be alive and well down in Athens. Go Vols! Get off to a good start in conference play by taking a road series win.
Georgia's ballpark plays very, very small.... hopefully our bats continue the plate approach they had last night and it leads to more success!

This team will be fine, regardless of results in March.

I am not a baseball guru- just a fan- but figured it would take time for this team to get going. Enjoy the ride and watch this team improve.

Go Vols!

Too early to tell if they will be fine or if they will struggle. Not time to panic but definitely some concern.

A bunch of others with some concerns too though.

Interesting Stats for the big SEC opening weekend in Athens. A couple of points:
1) GA has played a very weak schedule and didn’t benefit from playing a neutral site tournament like UT did in Arlington.
2) Ironic that GA’s best win was UT’s worst loss (Wright State)
3) GA is the King of the Portal but lack team continuity which has hurt them in postseason play.
4) GA has played 2 more games than UT but didn’t play a weekday game this week.
Team. Record. Top 25 Ranking. RPI. Non Conf SOS. Best Win. Worst Loss
GA 15-3. 8. 123. 243. Wright St. Western Carolina
UT. 12-4. 19. 31. 50. AZ State. Wright St

GA Returning Production* #234
TN Returning Production #167.

*Ranking of returning players from previous season’s roster including returning Plate Appearances, and returning Innings Pitched. It’s basically a measurement of team continuity.
