i watch baseballThe NBA draft makes me mad every year. Guys that get completely overshadowed against us are 1st rd picks. Yet Chaz who shoots 40% from 3 and was the best player on the court against these guys gets passed up likely becuase he is 23. What a joke some of these GMs are...
The answer to the question, “How good will that guy be at 23?” is often “not as good as that 23 year old who just had an awesome season” but GMs really don’t want to pass up on the young guy with potential even if they miss on them most of the timeThe NBA draft makes me mad every year. Yeah, but then they trade them for some scrap pieces once they don't perform immediately. I understand it at the top of the draft with players with high ceilings, but why not take the guaranteed talent in the middle of the first and give them a few years to figure it out?The answer to the question, “How good will that guy be at 23?” is often “not as good as that 23 year old who just had an awesome season” but GMs really don’t want to pass up on the young guy with potential even if they miss on them most of the time

I thought CMB was a really good college player, but he did most of his damage in the paint. Doesn’t seem like that would translate as a 6’-8” guy? Maybe he will change his game like Grant Williams?Colin Murray Boyles at 9 and Thomas Sorber at 15 just kinds of underscores how disconnected the NBA is from selecting based on college production. I saw Sorber play in person and never thought to myself “Dang, that guy is a Top 15 pick!!”
Basilio had Mark Griffin on yesterday who has seen some closed practices. From blog this morning:
"That according to Mark Griffin who joined yesterday and offered the assessment of Tennessee that this team is loaded down low, athletic and shooting challenged. He called the Vols the beefiest he's seen down low. He also said that JP Estrella was going full bore in the closed practices he saw. Griff also shared that UT must develop some consistent outside shooting because he doesn't know where it's going to come from. That's an honest assessment and Griff (of Griffin's 3 Pointers fame) is all over it ... Can I get an Ament"
Pretty encouraging on Estrella. Hope he can stay healthy. Still concerned over the lack of consistent shooting threats.
Not that it’s a high bar, but I’ll predict it’s the best 3pt shooting team we’ve had the last 5 years, and that was a Top 60 nationally 3pt shooting team. If we get that combined with what we think we are going to get with an improved post, it should equal a better offense imo.Lack of consistent outside scoring has plagued this team for years. At this point, feels like it’s just never going to get fixed.

Yea, we’ve not had 3 guys any 1 year average 35%+ on 3+ attempts from 3 a game since the Bone/Admiral/Bowden team…that’s been the biggest issue, only having 1-2 consistent and respected shooters, I too think that changes this year, but we’ll see. There’s usually one or two exceptional 3-point shooters. Unfortunately there hasn’t been an equivalent complementary player on the perimeter to keep teams honest defending multiple threats at the same time. Last year was pretty good with both Lanier and Gainey, but a lot of the time Gainey was spelling Lanier. ZZ was very streaky. Mashack was low volume.
Hasn't been pretty good the last few years? DK, Chaz, Gainey, and ZZ at times
ZZ and against have always been streaky shooters so it was expected. Igor and Dubar significantly regressing from 3 definitely hurt us.Consistent outside scoring means multiple threats to score from 3. DK and Chaz were not on the same team. Gainey was not consistent. He was clutch, I’ll give you that. But not consistent. He shot 30% from 3 this past year. Zeigler shot only 32%.
I agree that it changes. At minimum, JG, Ament, Abram 3+ and 35%+ this year.Yea, we’ve not had 3 guys any 1 year average 35%+ on 3+ attempts from 3 a game since the Bone/Admiral/Bowden team…that’s been the biggest issue, only having 1-2 consistent and respected shooters, I too think that changes this year, but we’ll see.
Damian Lillard was a 4 year guy from Weber StateDraymond Green is the only 4 year college player I can even think of in the last 10 years that made an All-NBA team. And I’m talking 1st, 2nd or 3rd team.
There might be 1 more i’m just forgetting.
So the data isn’t necessarily on your side with that argument.
What I’ve gathered he’s shot very well, especially catch and shoot, plays good defense…not a great ball handler, or “scorer” as in going and getting his, doesn’t drive much unless wide open. All of that is exactly what my hope and expectation was for him, so I’ve been happy with what I’ve heard, if folks were expecting Knecht or Lanier that was never going to happen. I’ve said it before, my hope for Abram is be our best on ball defender, and shoot 8 threes a game hitting 37%+. That likely makes him around a 10ppg scorer and given what I expect from others I think that would be more than adequate and space the floor. Are practice reports on Abram that he’s good enough to deliver?
