I love Mashack and all he does as a team player but early on the game when Texas was playing off him and using that man to clog the lane really hurt our offense imo. Dubar’s ability to hit threes and keeping defense honest helped open up the floor for everyone.

Florida kinda cracked the code on restricting our offense. Even with our poor shooting, they essentially made us play offense 3 on 4 by denying the ball to ZZ and not allowing him to facilitate the offense, and then not even defending Mashack outside the paint. Texas utilized the same gameplan, tonight. When you only have to account for 3 offensive players by denying the ball to one and not guarding the other, it allows you to focus on the only 3 options you have to worry about scoring. Additionally, when one of those 3 is Okpara or Phillips, it really reduces the assignment to two guys out of Lanier/Milicic/Gainey.

As I think BTO mentioned in another thread we should be looking at SEC play in blocks of 3 games. Came out 2-1 first block which is completely reasonable expectation and keeps our goals set. I'd say with UGA, @ vandy, and and Miss St coming up ideally try to get 3 wins this block. That stupid high school gym of vandy always lends itself to weird games and UGA and Miss St are talented but those should be wins at home.

Exactly. It was good to see ZZ take over the 2nd half esp last 10 min...he was determined to attack the paint. Dubar was a great adj by CRB and he continues to impress - we don't win this game w/o him. Given the strategy to lay off Jahmai, I have wondered why we haven't made an adjustment to have him spot up for the corner 3 more (he is more comfortable there and my recollection is he showed he can hit it at a good clip alebit limited data sample) and also have him cut more around the basket as we saw some in this game.

I'll start by saying I've never seen a team shoot so many step-backs and turn-around jumpers for an entire game...good grief.

Anyway, Chaz continued to struggle (not worried - he'll snap out of it) but we got the W and we seemed to right the ship a bit on offense as we shot better overall and were more efficient. I thought ZZ didn't attack the paint enough in the 1H but he more than corrected that in 2H. Continue to love Dubar's game and he showed why some of us felt he will help us win some games down the road which is exactly what he did last night...12 and 6 with no t/o and only 1 foul. Okpara continues to show signs of developing...pretty solid game defensively although he is still a bit too inconsistent at times and the 4 OR were nice...need more putbacks from him. Igor was efficient but he has to look more to score (7 pts ain't gonna cut it from him)...also need more reb from him (6 is not enough).

Having said that, 2 games now where we have given up too many OR, turning the the ball over too much (esp last night), and shooting poorly from the charity stripe. Gotta clean that up and also generate a few more steals and t/o on D.

I think it goes without saying that I hate Kentucky from an athletics standpoint, but Mark Pope seems like genuinely great dude and it’s hard to not like him. His demeanor I’m sure is a breath of fresh air for Kentucky fans, even if their team feels like a carbon copy of last year (all offense, no defense).

Mayshack’s value is diminished when his assignment makes 3-4 prayers and several more really tough head scratching eye roll worthy shots.

I don’t think we’ll see another shot making display like the one that kid put on last night this season. He was unconscious. I think he got one dunk on a back cut and everything else was contested jumpers.

Yeah, it really felt like Texas hit as many contested shots in one game as some teams do in a month. Johnson and Pope, both hit some shots that made you think it might just not be our day.

His sophomore year, he had a few games that he kind of took over during dead slumps, just driving to the basket over and over. I remember thinking "wow, this year to year development is awesome."

Then... it kind of fizzled out. Never got a reliable jumper, although he occasionally takes and makes a 3. It felt like if he could develop a mid range game like pons or fulkerson (or even just take and make a 3 at a higher usage rate), we'd be better off. Idk, both hearing and seeing from coaches the disregard for his offensive game is disheartening. He's so athletic you have to think there's another gear in there somewhere.

That being said, my credentials are limited to playing in church leagues 20 years ago so I'm positive Barnes has this figured out better than I do.

It was maddening and I said in another post I've never seen so many step-backs and turn-arounds hit like that for a full game.

Yeah. Watching it was like Texas decided to play with the difficulty slider turned all the way up.

Dubar certainly has some irrational confidence. Which is something Barnes players sometimes lack and get too timid. Now he also gets lost on defense so hopefully his D improves so he can stay on the court.
