I’m not 100% on the rules, but I’m pretty sure he wouldn’t be able to enter next year’s draft. He would be under contract with the wizards still and they would have to be involved with any decision about where he plays next year.

Edit: or they’d own his rights or something like that.

Was that how MLB worked at one time? I don’t see a problem with a kid getting drafted and still playing another year in college.

I think MLB has always allowed any drafted player to finish college if they had eligibility and wished to. And they can re-entered the draft the next year without previous team retaining rights to them.

But aren't allowed to sign any professional contracts. So no minor league or foreign play really.

I want to say that they don’t re-enter the draft but are required to sign with the team who drafted them previously. If the MLB takes a chance on someone who doesn’t have to play immediately, then surely they don’t forfeit that pick.

It makes sense that they don’t get to sign a contract before returning to amateur athletics.

Honestly with the pending changes the MLB is proposing I'm not sure. Most the info out there from reputable sources is talking about the upcoming proposed changes.

So there is a chance that a team could draft a junior, they return to college and the following year that team still own their draft rights...I think though if they don't retain them they got an extra pick the following draft as a Compensation Pick: Granted to teams that fail to sign a drafted player from the previous year, or when a club loses certain qualified free agents and receives a compensatory selection based on revenue and luxury tax status

He was drafted, so he's got a spot and gets a contract. Coming back would maybe be some short time financial gain but the risk of injury would just not be worth it. Had he not been drafted, yes, but he would be foolish to return when he is getting his shot.

IIRC 2nd round draft picks aren’t guaranteed a contract and if he gets one it’s very possible at a lower amount than what he could receive in NIL next year.

I'm sure he could get more for one season of NIL here, but there are no guarantees he even gets drafted next year. For a fringe NBA player who is already age-challenged by NBA standards, why take that chance when you have an opportunity to fulfill your dream right now?

If it is really in play, it is a risk/reward calculation he will have to make. Input he has from all sources should guide his decision, not just historically driven logic.
