We came from the dirt and won 11 games by year 2, and made the playoff by year 4. Essentially two years of his first 5 we made the elite 8. It would be like claiming Kevin O'Neil was anything less than an amazing hire if he'd took over the Wade Houston mess and went to two elite 8s in the next 5 years.I guess if the barometer for Heupel has simply been “don’t make Tennessee a laughingstock anymore” then I unequivocally agree, it’s a grand slam.
I like Heupel. He resurrected Tennessee football. I think he’s a good coach. I don’t think he’s a championship coach though.
We’ve won nothing of merit outside of a couple of games against Alabama since he’s been here, so I can’t call it a home run. We’ve poured a lot of money and resources into football to try and fix it, and in the portal era it doesn’t take 6 years to turn things around.
Heck, we’ve seen one of the worst Power 4 programs in NCAA history go undefeated this year and win a national title. We’ve seen Ole Miss win two playoff games.
Typically, I would be like “It’s Year 6, it’s time to put up or shut up” but then you remember we did nothing at QB in the portal and we’re entering the season playing a freshman QB in an era that experience has dominated the sport. Which means if we’re being realistic it will be Year 7 before we can start talking about playoffs again.
This is what I have been expectingI think a recently fired head coach (McMahon or English) would likely view it favorably as an opportunity to rehab their career in a controlled environment for a coach who has a lot of influence in the sport. That is rumored to be what they are looking for rather than an up and coming young assistant. I think your point is probably more relevant for one of those type guys.
I’m not an insider for any program, but I know a direct staff member well on the LV program.I don't think it's possible that if it was as nefarious as is being portrayed, that they'd have survived an entire season with a head coach who had any semblance of control of her staff and program. She's either gutless or clueless, neither of which reflects well on her.

I can’t speak on Tubner as my friends role didn’t interact with him much outside of whole staff activities. But they were directly in interaction Lazo and KC.
From their observations, there were some stylistic disagreements and KC refused to listen to anyone she didn’t bring with her to the program.
That led to the things eventually trickling down to players and overall results. Nothing nefarious or even unprofessional; just people’s hearts weren’t in it and results suffered. Everyone knew these coaches were most likely leaving (Lazo and KC specifically discussed it weeks ago before season ended) and they finished out the season on as good of terms as possible. That’s why they had a hire ready after Lazo resigned.
It’s a bit of a cluster internally there. No clue what the plan is but it’s a big hole to climb out of.
This. We did well to get Heupel given the situation and his results def exceeded expectations but he may have hit his ceiling. DW retaining CRB was a great move and he def deserves credit for that at the time given the much higher salary req'ment. DW seems willing to follow his instincts and I do believe he's very pragmatic in his approach to most things...and we all know he more than anyone understands that universities must be competitive in athletics for even great $$$ inflow.I'm with you re: his hires at Tennessee.
Heupel...good, not great.
Caldwell...disaster.
Elander...too early to tell, but not great start.
To me, the common denominator is that all of those hires were low-key and risky hires. He hasn't gone out and made a big splash hire at Tennessee, yet, despite opportunities to do so. Heupel you kind of excuse due to the circumstances. So, what will Barnes's replacement look like? If we hire a relatively unproven low or mid-major coach or promote G. Polinsky or something, most won't be impressed or inspired for what is more or less a top-15 job, nationally.
Your not figuring in the amount of teams trying to win in basketball vs football. For example we have an entire coference of Catholic city schools with National Championships and Final Fours in their trophy case that don't even participate or don't try to win at division one football. It's probably something like 60 major players in basketball to 30 in football. I do think Huepal has been a good hire but he needs to get to the next level soon.We came from the dirt and won 11 games by year 2, and made the playoff by year 4. It's MUCH easier to win in basketball at the highest levels than it is to win there in football. You're actually making my point about the job Heupel has done so far.Your not figuring in the amount of teams trying to win in basketball vs football.
