The NFL just lost a fan today

I think the NFL is headed for a problem, many die hard fans I know and am one myself are so tired of all the penalties and confusing rules.

He did not control the ball. I don't like the Cowboys either. That is the rule and they called it correctly

"In the act of the catch"

The rule does not say when the act of the catch is over, so the refs could have ruled either way and it would have been correct. Letter of the law does not tell us what the right call is. Spirit of the law should tell us that 5 points of contact before losing control is sufficient...and it was overturned.

It was clearly the wrong call.,

And they just called a similar play totally different in the Colts vs. Broncos game.

In the Cowboys game they overturned a call to say that a guy who touched down 3 feet, a hand, and then an elbow did not have possession.

In the Broncos game they overturned a call to say that a guy who touched down 2 feet had possession.

Makes no sense, especially when you consider Bryant had the ball for well over a second and the Colts guy had the ball for .0002 seconds.

You can claim and complain that the rule is garbage, I agree with that, but the call was made correctly according to the rules IMO.

COMPLETED OR INTERCEPTED PASS
Article 3 Completed or Intercepted Pass. A player who makes a catch may advance the ball. A forward
pass is complete (by the offense) or intercepted (by the defense) if a player, who is inbounds:
(a) secures control of the ball in his hands or arms prior to the ball touching the ground; and
(b) touches the ground inbounds with both feet or with any part of his body other than his hands; and
(c) maintains control of the ball long enough, after (a) and (b) have been fulfilled, to enable him to
perform any act common to the game (i.e., maintaining control long enough to pitch it, pass it,
advance with it, or avoid or ward off an opponent, etc.).
Note 1: It is not necessary that he commit such an act, provided that he maintains control of the ball long
enough to do so.
Note 2: If a player has control of the ball, a slight movement of the ball will not be considered a loss of
possession. He must lose control of the ball in order to rule that there has been a loss of possession.
If the player loses the ball while simultaneously touching both feet or any part of his body other than his hands
to the ground, or if there is any doubt that the acts were simultaneous, it is not a catch.
Item 1: Player Going to the Ground. If a player goes to the ground in the act of catching a pass (with or
without contact by an opponent), he must maintain control of the ball throughout the process of contacting
the ground, whether in the field of play or the end zone. If he loses control of the ball, and the ball touches
the ground before he regains control, the pass is incomplete. If he regains control prior to the ball touching

the ground, the pass is complete.
Item 2: Sideline Catches. If a player goes to the ground out-of-bounds (with or without contact by an
opponent) in the process of making a catch at the sideline, he must maintain complete and continuous
control of the ball throughout the process of contacting the ground, or the pass is incomplete.
Item 3: End Zone Catches. If a player controls the ball while in the end zone, both feet, or any part of his body
other than his hands, must be completely on the ground before losing control, or the pass is incomplete.

A completion of a pass differs from a fielding a punt return

When does the act of catching a pass end? If Bryant catches the ball and stumbles for 10 steps before coughing it up (instead of 3), is it a catch, or is it still in the act of a catch?

That's what the rule does not tell us.

With the wording of the rule, no it wouldnt be. Look, I'm not debating that the rule needs changing, but the call was made iaw the rule.

So say Bryant makes a catch at his own 20 and stumbles for 80 yards, never fully looking in control of the play, and then fumbles when he finally hits the ground...there has to be an objective cut-off somewhere. The act of a catch is totally subjective.

The rule is subjective so it can be called either way. It should be a catch, cause damn, 3 steps and then a lunge for the endzone. Either way, it shouldn't be overturned because the rule is subjective. Replay booth can't overturn a call on the field because they subjectively disagree with the ref about how a rule should be interpreted. That's absurd.

According to a story on profootballtalk the ratings for yesterday's games were down from last year, I expect this trend to continue with the officiating and rules being so pathetic.

They will fall even farther if PM retires -- I didnt watch more then 5 games the season he was out --- I zone out on college ball on Saturdays pretty much as it is.

NFL was king for a while, they will still be king in sports but not last the last few years. Too many penalties, too soft of QBs and dbs are not allowed to play much at all and the leagues flagship team continues to cheat
