The Nation hosts struggle to talk up the Vols

Few if any around here have more muted expectations than I, but I feel pretty positive about the early results. The two things that I find most promising:

1. Pruitt's sideline demeanor. He does get after the players, but he seems comfortable in the environment, unlike Mullen, who looked somewhat confused or perhaps stunned at times.
2. The players have a more imposing look about them than those of the last few seasons, but maybe I am just seeing what I was hoping against all hope to witness. Anyway, this week minimize injuries!

Mullen probably was stunned cold because he's never had such ineptitude at Florida . Must have been a bit confusing.

It most likely is true. I don’t think enhanced rescue squad activity is necessary though. Any fans deluded enough to believe our line play would be sufficient to win a lot this year were brought to reality in a rude way last weekend. It should be plain as day that we have gaping holes in talent relative to our conference on the lines and in the secondary. There’s no quick fix for that.
Not sure if it's talent, we have at least 3 - 4/5 star players playing on our D- line and same on the O line. They just haven't been coached in the last 5 years up until now. They'll get better, but Rome wasn't built in a day.

We haven’t won an SEC game since November 2016. We’re at the bottom trying to climb our way out so it’s difficult to spin that.

Jones never could get it through his thick skull that the SEC is a line of scrimmage league. Just never built any depth on defensive or offensive lines. Snagging some high end wide receivers or running backs can work in the old Big East or Big 12 but you have to control the LOS in the SEC. All of the defenses are too good and too fast to rely on skill position guys to break plays all the time.

Regarding #1.

It is refreshing to see the head coach maintain some semblance of composure instead of turning beet red after every blown play.

The truth hurts sometimes... Mid Sept through Oct is going to be rough but it will pay big dividends come Nov is we can stay healthy. Still think 7-5 is possible if we can beat Florida in 2 weeks.

I tuned into WNML tonight at 6pm to listen to the The Nation wth Chris Lowe and Austin Price.
It’s supposedly an hour long show about UT football.
But they spent most of the time talking about other SEC teams.
When they did talk Vols, they said that if we couldn’t generate a pass rush against ETSU, that SEC QBs will tear us apart. Offensively, they said we only have one quality offensive lineman and we just won’t have a rushing attack against SEC defenses.
I’m not saying they were wrong.
But, for their audience of Vol fans, it was damn depressing.
Lowe did say he thinks Pruitt knows what’s he’s doing. Just said the talent isn’t there yet.

I think we are void of talent in some key areas but we are by no means empty on talented players. People forget this is the first win in quite some time for these players. They had forgotten how to win because of how long it’s been. their will was broken and the way they played has been questioned over the past 9 months. Their still trying to figure out how to play the right way, and practice the right way day in and day out. What we see against UTEP is critical I think because it will show us how we respond after getting a win and some confidence the week prior. Confidence can do strange things to a team, my hope is that we can start snow balling these wins and confidence into a team that can play well week in and week out despite some of the deficiencies they may have. Pruitt has done a good job of letting the players know that this is a week by week lineup. It’s only a matter of time before some young guys start to blossom under this method and we start seeing them on the field Producing big plays.

They also said we have a 5 star tackle committed and need to hold onto and we have another considering us. I have listened to them for years and they both really like UT, but what is the old saying about lipstick on a pig.
Looks like we can offer some immediate playing time then.

Yep, spot on assessment, if we play like that against any SEC team we would be down by a couple of scores if not more by the end of the 1st half. This has been a recurring theme ever since Botch Jones. We start out like we don't know what is going on or what we are doing. The 1st series against WVU was very similar. They should scrimmage for half an hour before the games to get these guys ready to play. Never seen a team come out so lax in my life.

I just think Phil is the consume coach and of course he's going to say that....heck...I wished we had punched it in too..Thats just COACH PHIL FULMER...as far as Lowe saying those things about the Vols...I think he's stating the obvious that most in and around the program understood from day one...to echo..CJP is telling recruits it going to be rough...and its going to be rough this year....
consume or consummate or consomme or was that a Krispy Kreme reference?

I support Pruitt and this team but they are correct SEC teams we will struggle to run the ball and JG will have to hurry passes because our O-Line needs some work.

I haven't watched it, but it sounds like they are giving us the respect of not lying to us. Credibility will be good for their ratings in the long term, it means when they say something positive, we can believe it. I like that from journalists, that's real journalism.

They are right.
The score yesterday was deceiving. 414 Yards of total offense. Horrible on 3rd down. Outright embarrassing in the 1st quarter.
agreed on the first quarter, but as to our offense we had 21 points on turnovers. so all of three yards (banks second TD) for those points. that is going to cut back on the total yards.
