the more I'm convinced he's not the guy.

Aloof, standoffish, despises small talk. "Weird" personality - even his closest friends admit. Hates speaking engagements. How does a guy like that recruit?

Doesn't seem at all like a good fit in an SEC culture. He won't want to speak to the Dickson Rotary Club or the Sweetwater Kiwanis. No Vol Walk for him, because "eww - fans wanting to high five me".

Yeah, yeah I know the record at Oregon. Eugene is not Knoxville.

Yep. Has to be a fit. Great coach but a personality that reminds me of a combination of Dooley and Leach. I'm also more than certain Petrino is a huge mistake. The more I read, the more I think we need to target Fuente. Let him know he's our guy. Don't think we should give guys like Patterson and Franklin contract leverage and let every other candidate know they were a fall back choice. Neither of those guys is coming. Same for Gruden. Just go after Fuente first and get him.

Yes, because Nicky Satan has such a magnetic personality! Nothing more compelling than watching a Nicky Satan press conference.

His personality and the big boosters would look like two trains colliding. They would NEVER hire him here.

Here in lies the problem. The old guard of UT wants a good ole boy who is a yes man to the all the donors. Chip isn’t that guy. Hiring a big name at big money means there’s gonna be a culture change. I hope that’s the case. You think Saban is doing Big Crimson Caravans and QB rotary club speeches? Hell no.

Also, it is substantially easier to recruit at Tennessee as a household name compared to Oregon. All he does is have to surround himself with a bunch of greatbrecruiting assistants and staff and it would be easy for him to get talent.

The only reason people say Tennessee doesn’t sell itself is because Butch puts so much effort and energy into recruiting because he knows he can’t coach competently or develop talent. That’s the only reason he has gotten 5 years.

Chip could win here. Recruits would flock here.

JMSqb11,

There is one man who can thread that needle. He can be his own man, exert his influence with boosters and the AD, recruit like heck, and still go to McNairy County to the Lions Club and leave 'em wanting more. People are just drawn to the guy. Merch and ticket sales would skyrocket.

Jon Gruden

Gruden would win here. Recruits would flock here.

Chip wants back in the nfl---he'll use a college job for a couple of years to build back his street cred.

If he wins an SEC and/or National Championship and helps us to make the playoffs a couple of times between now and him bolting again for the NFL then I am fine with that. Although, I am sure people said the same thing about Nicky Satan when he took over for Alabama.

Moot point, in my opinion. Never was coming, never would consider it. One of the “pipe dream“ candidates from the Fanbase

Jon Gruden makes 6.5 million per year to talk about football on tv. Why would anyone give that up to do all the hard work a head coach has to do? It would probably take 10 million per year for him to even consider it. Not realistic.

I'd consider Kelly a 2nd tier hire. People are enamored with him because his run of success at Oregon and the idea that he'll be like Saban post-NFL. It's an easy comparison to make, but once you dig beneath the surface, there are many reasons to be wary.

(1) Chip Kelly wasn't a strong recruiter, whereas Nick Saban returned to the college game precisely because he knew he was one of the best recruiters in the nation. Kelly hates recruiting (which was one of the reasons he left for the NFL to begin with).

(2) Chip Kelly's success at Oregon was highly dependent upon a Hurry Up No Huddle offense. However, the Chip Kelly offense has largely been figured out now. During his last year in Philadelphia and while he was in San Fran, opposing defenses were basically calling out Kelly's offensive plays before the plays were run. The HUNH style requires a lot of simplification and eventually the NFL defenses caught on. At this point, college defenses have also caught on. I don't think Kelly's style would be as successful this go around without significant changes.

(3) As you said, Kelly is known as aloof and stand-offish. Many of his problems at the NFL level revolved around poor relations with his players.

I'm not saying he couldn't change his style up and be successful again, but I don't consider him the "home run hire" that Nick Saban or Jim Harbaugh were. He might be able to revive the magic or his offense might struggle this time around. I'm just not sure I want to "gamble on him" when there are better candidates out there.

He makes that now, but the more advertising revenue ESPN loses and the more payroll they shed, how much longer is that viable? Apparently, he's also growing tired of ESPN's political activism.

Why would he come here? UT has a special place in Gruden's heart. He has stated this multiple times. His first job in coaching was here, under Majors. He can't enjoy seeing us fall out of football relevancy. His wife wants to be near her parents. He has motivations to come here.

The money is here. All of the "insiders" say so. They're opening up the checkbook this time.

May not happen - but it's not so ridiculous as some believe.

The only offense I take to your comment is that we would want our coach in McNasty County.

Because that salary will go down when his current contract expires. ESPN is hemorrhaging money and these top contracts aren't sustainable.

People are enamored with Chip because History says he will join an exclusive club that only Saban and Urban belong too. And it’s true.

I'll believe it when I see it. The "insiders" have been wrong on everything I've seen them supposedly say. So, if he comes here, great, but history says we'll end up with a mid-major hope and a prayer.

Chip Kelly is not a good fit at UT or in the SEC. Short-term solution. I could think of better options for the money we would have to pay him.

I think you mean his contract is NOT sustainable, and if so, you're exactly right. See my previous post. ESPN is losing subscribers and advertisers left and right. Cutting payroll like it's going out of style.

When did you talk to Gruden? You act like he is one of your emergency contacts.

ESPN is losing money because of cord cutters like me, but they will make that money back next round of contract negotiations with major sports, and ad revenue.

Yeah......no I don't. Have never spoken to him. Have never met him. Have never pretended to have any inside knowledge.

What I have done is read and watch interviews with him and his family.

Nice try, though.......

Some of you don't want a proven winner because of personality? Wow, you deserve Butch. You would turn down Nick Saban if he was an option.
