The meltdown that is happening on the Vandy message boards

As bad as Vandy was they should celebrate the moral victory and be at least a little inspired that Mason didn't lose the team at the end. Of course they should have been rooting they gut drug by us and fired Mason.

And on the flip side UT was missing half their Team and still won.

and a degree is not a degree is not a degree. Its a start. Where you get it does hold a tremendous amount of clout in the real world. Ask any HR person.

Can't say I agree with that.

My, my wife's, and 2 good friends' experiences have been the exact opposite over the last 2 or 3 years.

For all of us, HR people pretty much seemed to verify its legit, then check a box for a degree. Work experience and references proved to be much more valuable.

Best man from my wedding hires for a lot of leadership positions at a large cellular provider. He said what school a degree is from isn't in the first 6 or 7 things he considers.

Actually, I have one from UT. And you? It is you that must not have one or you'd know that in the real world there is an hierarchy in degrees. As someone mentioned, in Tennessee a degree from UTK or Vandy hold about the same level. Then it drops to a lower level. Venture out from the state line and that same degree from UTK or Vandy still holds a higher level of regard. Lesser know schools such as Tn Tech, MTSU, or even CN, don't hold their prestige. Sorry but that's life.

I just printed mine from the internets. I got a masters too. Used the laser printer at work..it looks pro.

You must not have a college degree then if you think that.

A degree is a degree is a degree. A Vandy football players communications degree is just as worthless as a UNC one, etc, etc.

For undergrad as long as the school is ABET accredited then to a large degree that's mostly it. Unless there are special circumstances/ties to the school or special programs. ( like formula SAE competition in engineering colleges)

Grad school is a completely different story

That's some funny stuff man.

So wrong but funny.

The average undergrad and even masters degree are just that... Degrees.

Unless you're from an Ivy school (and even not always then) it doesn't matter where it came from if it's accredited.

Unless you're from an Ivy school (and even not always then) it doesn't matter where it came from if it's accredited.

I think it is much more complicated than that.

I've read some studies that suggest that graduating top 10% in your class, at a regionally recognized school (UT, UGA, etc) is as valuable as graduating in the same field in an Ivy league school, when simply comparing starting salaries.

Many people go to more 'prestigious' schools, not for the degree, but for the connections. There is no doubt that Vandy, Harvard, Duke people spread out across the nation and look for their own. Someone getting a law degree from UVA, or a MBA from UNC, or an engineering degree from Georgia Tech will get looks that a similar degrees from Eastern Central State Tech wouldn't, accredited or not.

The bottom line is that if you are going into a specific field that requires a specific degree, where you went and how you did has value. (think engineering, architecture, logistics, etc).

If you're applying for a job that just requires proof of a college education, then it is far less likely to matter if your diploma says "University of Phoenix" or "MTSU."

The fact that many vocations now require a college degree for no good reason except to cull applicants is what is devaluing the degree itself. Everyone is forced into a funnel, prices go up, degrees are offered with no hope of ROI, and people end up believing that a degree is just a degree. When firefighters in some locations require a college degree, and no disrespect to firefighters as I did my time as one, there is a problem.

Can we get back to making fun of Vandy?

Gladly.

I always forget how screwed up their stadium is. Sections randomly starting over in the middle of a row, 1 row will be numbered north to south but the row behind it will be numbered south to north, etc.

And the atmosphere is pitiful-

I was standing by the gate into their "facility" watching the UK/Louisville game on a video board they had set up in the street. They opened the gate to let the recruits make their way to the stadium. Gate opens and the recruits see about 200 TN fans just milling about. Maybe 12 Vandy fans in sight. An assistant of some sort just shook and dropped his head...he didn't even look angry, more of a "I have got to get my a$$ outta here" look. I damn near felt bad.

Biggest laugh I got was when we were waiting to enter the stadium I overheard a dad say to his young kids "kids are yall ready to experience your first UT home game?" I looked over and they were completely decked out in Vandy gear haha.

Most the UT fans in our section clapped when they introduced the Vandy seniors. I guess we all figured if we didn't clap then who would?
