I was born and raised in Tennessee and the problem as I see it with producing "in state" talent starts with the craddle thru to High School. I have been fortunate to live in the only town in Alabama worth living in outside of Orange Beach...of course Prattville.

Prattville is a small town with a big time program! Aside from a 6A 3 peat...check out the D1 signees from one school this year alone. ..14 with 3 going to LSU, Alabama, and Ole Miss respectively.

Tennessee doesnt get this from any one of the three sections of the state except Maryville. The key to success here is Peewee to HS...The HS coach teaches the coaches of the little guys his system and all of the little guys grow up coming thru the same transparent system all the way thru HS. When they get to HS the system is second nature and they rock! Until Tennessee HS coaches learn to develop kids like this we will continue to have to go out of state for recruits.

Just an observation

True that most little league FB programs in this state are awful. There aren't a lot of coaches at the middle and high school level that are any good at assessing talent.

Halls High in k-town does this and they still suck every year. It might help if they ran something other than a wing T formation.

That wing-T is deadly if used correctly.

Here on the south side of town, you'd see guys that ran different offenses at different levels of play. For example, when I played 10 yo pee-wee, we ran a very diluted singleback offense set. The middle school ran an I formation. The high school team ran a West Virginia-like spread.

The coach my son had last year in flag football just moved down from Pennsylvania. When he registered his son to play they asked if he could coach and he said it caught him by suprise. He said they had to wait years to become a coach because guys would take over a team and continue to run it year after year. All the sports I have been around have the people over it begging parents to be involved. The football program was ok but the baseball and basketball programs have some people who really don't want to do it and others who don't know how to do it.

I really don't know why people try to make this into some kind of issue about Pee wee football or coaches. There is a simple reason why Tenn does not produce the talent and it is a fact not an opinion. Its the amount of people in the state. Look at the states who produce the talent Florida, California, Texas, Georgia. This does not include the states in the north because football is not what it is to the people in these states but even the Virgiana, DC and baltimore is starting to produce more talent. They actually had a big thing on it during signing day on ESPN. It all came down to people in the state.

Alabama, Mississippi, and South Carolina produce some amazing talent each year, and if I remember right, none of those states are as big as Tennessee, population-wise.

It's the same reason that the United States hasn't produced a team that can win a World Cup or is a major powerhouse. It's not that America doesn't have the soccer talent. It does. But our development programs are crap. Utter crap. That's why you see a lot of kids do other sports after they get out of grade school.

That, and the other sports in this country are more popular.

Nah, the problem w/ TN H.S. football is simply the lack of money in our education system in general. Georgia pays their teachers and coaches more and has better facilities. I don't know why I keep reading how much money the TN lottery has raised for education then yet TN education system constantly still has cutbacks.
Anyways, facilities are HUGE into improving a H.S.'s chance of being successful in athletics. A bigger, better weight room builds a better athlete. Then of course if you can pay more coaches that is always going to make a better athlete. I went to Fulton high here in Knoxville in the early 90's when Fulton was about to be shutdown. The weight room had 2 benches and the room itself was our locker room and was very small and stuffy. We still had good basketball programs then b/c a weight room isn't goin to affect basketball as much as football. Anyways, as soon as Fulton got renovated... they've been a state power. It's the same coaches. But the facilites are way nicer. I think they have more coaches on staff now which also helps.
But anyways, that is what hinders TN athletics... the TN education system itself being ranked near last in the country. Georgia is highly thought of in football recruiting and they don't really have a geography advantage (i.e you hear florida and Cali athletes are better b/c of warm weather and year round running). Georgia's advantage is money invested in the highschools.
So?!? If we want TN highschool football to better which in turn would help the vols a LOT?! We need to find out where the heck our TN lottery money is going?!? lol

Sorrry, I'm not trying to make this political. I'm saying this lightly as far as the TN lottery money... but being real as far as the reason why TN H.S. Football isn't regarded high compared to many other states.

I found this article interesting it breaks it all down for you by state, capita, city. Hope this link works. Tennessee is not as bad off as it sounds some times, it's just that the states that border to the south off us produce a lot of talent making ours look worse at times.

You are 100% right I live in B'ham and I can see it for myself that the competition in Alabama is way better than it is in Tennessee there are about 4 guys from this class from Alabama.

Yea, I'm not buying that one at all. If you're a good football player, you're a good football player. Doesn't matter what color you are.
Well it's fact your right if you are a good fb player your a good fb player but african americans make up a majority of the elite top caliber players.IF you don't agree please explain this why do african americans only make up 17% of TN population in 2005 but out of the top 25 instate players in 2010 they make 92% of them. check demographics

Its not so much race as it is the "system" The TSSAA system of not embracing little Vols from early on and developing young kids thru to HS Stinks!

I agree with Prattville Vol - it is organization from Middle school and up in AL. Alabama High School Association or the equivalent of TSSAA is more progressive, more clinics at both UA and AU - Coaches here love to share - they know the efforts in helping early makes their practice times with an educated team more effective. More athletic programs are scheduled to keep the kids involved and enhance their abilities. Better organized spring and summer programs for football. Alabama does not have a Lottery and yet the programs are funded by state and local governments or other means such as team boosters clubs, etc.. So how do you start change? Our Support in both time and $ - push TSSAA to look at the AL, GA and FL to benchmark their successes and build from there - they work for you!. It won't take near as much time as you may think. Friday night lights are fun nights! The kids who really benefit from this are the ones who at the high school level is as far as they will play. Something they will remember a life time.
I grew up in TN and love my home state. If and when I move back to TN I will jump into the effort-I have helped with some of this here and have enjoyed the time I spent. GBO!

Duh, because those states have more people. Mississippi actually produces more players in college or pro, per capita, than any other state in the US.

That is stupid----Get a video game do a draft from the NFL and try to make an all white team. I did once and it couldnt be done bc there was not a single white cornerback in the entire NFL at the time. My time was extremely poor at WR, DB, linebacker, RB---had to use Alstott mainly. It is a fact people need to come to realize that black people are better athletes in general than white people.
