The Logo Jerry West has passed away

When Los Angeles had Jerry West night in his final season, Bill Russell flew himself to LA, asked to give a speech, did a 5-10 minute tribute to West and then ended it saying (slightly paraphasing) “Jerry, I hope you find nothing but happiness in your life.”

That’s how respected Jerry West was by his peers

Edit: I wanted to give the full correct quote. From Bill Simmons’ book,

“Jerry, I once wrote that success is a journey, and that the greatest honor a man can have is the respect and friendship of his peers. You have that more than any man I know. Jerry, you are, in every sense of the word, truly a champion. If I could have one wish granted, it would be that you would always be happy.”

One of the GOATS and doesn't get enough due. If he were on the Celtics instead of the Lakers, it'd probably be a debate between MJ, Lebron, and West

Maybe the only pre-modern era perimeter player that you could time travel drop into any era and he'd succeed?

He was making All-Defense in his 30’s averaged 2.6 steals per game in his final and only year they kept track, was routinely hitting jump shots past the three point line (maybe the first guard that they would reset with 5 seconds on the shot clock at the top of the key to do something with it), he had a 6’9 wingspan and shot 47% when guys routinely shot 41-42% in the quantity over quality era. You drop him in 2024, give him a year to understand the game and how’s it’s played (and remember this man said to keep Klay Thompson over Kevin Love) and he would be close to what Luka does offensively while being a defensive menace.

Elgin tears his knee in game 1 of the playoffs in 1965. West drags his team to the finals averaging 40.6/6/5 (while maintaining above average efficiency for the era!) and takes a game from in their hey day Boston (Jones, Russell are tail end of their primes, Hondo is there with Satch Sanders and Heinsohn, KC Jones is still around) dropping 43-12-7 on 25 shots in game 3

If he were coming up today, he'd be insane. He was a smooth fluid player with a bag ahead of its time, he played elite ball both ways, and he was a MF. He was built a little like Knecht (not in terms of height) but I assume with no weight training. He'd be a beast today.

West and Pete Maravich were the purest shooters that have played in the NBA.
