The field of candidates is:

* Randy Shannon - former University of Miami Head Coach and DC.

* Phil Bennett - Current DC at Baylor, former DC at Oklahoma, LSU, and Pitt.

* Ron Zook - former head coach at Illinois, former head coach and assistant at Florida, former assistant coach at UT and former assistant coach for New Orleans Saints.

* Tommy Spangler - Current DC at Louisiana Tech

* Mel Tucker - former DC and interim head coach for the Jacksonville Jaguars.

* Kevin Steele - Current DC at Clemson, former DC at Alabama, Former Assistant at nebraska and for Carolina Panthers, and former head coach at Baylor. Former national recruiter of the year.

What do you think? Who do you like? Who do you not like? IN what order would you list your preferences?

Who is the DC at Bama?

Can't we offer him like $2Mill? Seems pretty good.

Not saying, just saying.

Out of those ... I would say UT's chances are Zook and Spangler ... Shannon is everyone's dream hire. I still would add Lance Thompson on the list though.

My opinion on each:

Shannon - Would be a homerun hire, but at this point I'm not seeing him as the guy. Plus, there is no way he'll be good enough to satisfy all the hype that's gone on over the last few days.

Bennett - Not a good recruiter, but there aren't very many with his resume. Top 10 defenses at 4 different schools. Have also read that he's very intense and demanding as a coach.

Zook - He's pretty similar to Shannon. Great recruiter and a great DC who failed as the head man. He'd be a great hire.

Spangler - Good coach, I'm sure, but there would be outrage on here.

Tucker - Bet he'll end up with another NFL DC job, but this would be great.

Steele - Not happening anymore IMO.

My preferences:

1) Mel Tucker - this guy is a winner.
2) Ron Zook - solid coach and excellent recruiter.
3) Randy Shannon - solid coach.
4) Phil Bennett - solid and will move on to new gig in a few years.
5) Tommy Spangler - defense will get better quickly.
6) Kevin Steele - would be the best recruiter on the staff.

Honestly, we will be fine with any of these men as our next DC- as far as coaching goes. We need a coach who is great on the field at coaching more than we need just a name.

If Zook goes to Auburn and we don't get Shannon. Where does Shannon end up? I don't think he sits out another year.

Why do you feel Bennett would move on after a couple of years? He is older and has failed as a head coach so that shouldn't be a worry IMO

Zook
Bennett
Steele
In that order
Think Zook would a great hire open some BIG recruiting doors

Even though his defense was torched for 70, I think Steele would be a pretty solid hire, prob. not a homerun hire, but solid none the less.

It is just his history. Some coaches have difficulty staying in one place for long because of their personalities and intensity.

Chavis 's 2007 UT defense got torched by Florida for 59 points and would have scored more if Meyer had not called off the dogs. He is still in coaching.
