The Latest Rumor -- Butch Davis

Davis is better than Fulmer, but he's not a long-term solution since he's pretty old. A younger head coach would be better, but UT needs a proven head coach at the D-1 level, in a tough conference.

SEC Legends (in the last 30 years)

1) Bear Bryant
2) Steve Spurrier
3) Vince Dooley
4) Phil Fulmer
5) Pat Dye

I just dont see how Fulmer is a legend of the SEC. Fulmer was a good coach for the first seven years he was coach but since has been at best a mediocre coach. Im sorry if it sounds like I hate CPF, but he just isn't a legend in my eyes. I just think of him as a coach who used to be pretty good but over the last five or six years has been horrible.

I would say that 150 wins a National Championship and 2 SEC titles puts him in legendary status. Look what Dooley done at the end of his career and its worse than what PF has done here. Alot of people around here have selective amnesia.

2 SEC Titles in 16 years is not very impressive especially at the University of Tennessee. CPF won a lot of games when the SEC was down but now when competition has leveled out he has struggled to compete. When I think of a legend I think of someone who consistently won big games and who coaches feared to coach against. We do not win any big games and we even struggled many times in the 90's to win big games (example Florida). Also do you think coaches fear coaching against CPF, I would highly doubt it. Fulmer has made his living by beating teams that were way overmatched on talent, and being a good recruiter. CPF has never been a good game coach because everytime the competition is almost equal Fulmer plays not to lose. Hell he even said that after the Florida game this year, he was quoted as saying that he had the players to tight. Fulmer's record against the big time coaches of the SEC, Saban, Richt, Spurrier, Meyer, Tubberville, and Miles is horrendous, and that my friends shows that hes not a legendary coach.

He's the Number one guy on my list right now..

but what makes everyone think that he's gonna leave UNC?
there actually having a good year and a bright future

 Well said....

stats can be deceiving, but i couldn't help notice how similar davis and fulmer look on paper when comparing davis' college career of 7 complete seasons to fulmer's last 7 seasons:

Age: BD almost 57, PF 58

BD W55 L28 66%
PF W63 L27 70%

9 or more wins in a season: BD 4 PF 5

losing seasons: BD 2 PF 1

Championships:
BD 1 Big East, plus two ties PF: 0 SECC, 3 E Division
(can debate how an SEC East title compares to a tie for the Big East championship)

Now you can add in the part about how Butch inherited a team on probation with a lot of scholarships, and paved the way for the run of what may be the most dominant team in college football history, and lead to an impressive string of seasons for Miami. He also got an NFL job, which says a lot. I don't think Fulmer has ever been seriously considered for one. Although his pro record wasn't great, he took the worthless Browns franchise to the playoffs, the only time they have made it since expansion.

With only a $2 mil buyout at UNC, Davis might be worth a shot for a few years (he's age 57, so he will not be a long-term solution).
