I think FOTR captured the feel of the book more than the other two and that is why I adore it rather than merely liking it.
I couldn't wait to see the Twin Towers and I walked out of the theater just liking it.
Same goes for the Return of the King, the downplay of Gondor really turned me sour to the movie, although, I do have to admit the added seen with Faramir and the Knights of Gondor charged Osquiliath really was a nice addition.
I'm with OE. Both the Twin Towers and ROTK left me with more to be desired.
However, I remember going to the FOTR when it first opened with a bunch of friends. Some dork dressed as Saruman in the front left corner, some geek dressed as Sauron in rear right corner and myself (seated somewhere near the middle of the theatre) were the only three that realized that was the end of the first movie. I was blown away by it.

Communist.
i was actually given permission to skip a day of class for one of my film studies classes because the professor was showing a Star Trek movie and knew of my hatred for them. Just about everyone else in the class was so excited about getting to see that movie, no one really cared that I didn't have to show.
a. i didn't say take out the fighting, i just said they didn't need to last an hour.
b. thanks for your opinion on the movie.
