The "Head Coach in Waiting" Trend

If a 2 mill or 3 mill a year head coaching job opens Muschamp will be gone. Brown is 57 and could possible coach another 10 to 15 years. Will wont wait that long.

Yeah I was wondering that myself. Brown's not too old and isn't showing any signs of slowing down. Considering Muschamp could probably get a job this year, I don't see him waiting too long for Brown to retire. I think Texas just held on to Muschamp for only 1-2 more years.

I think that if he doesn't become HC within the next 2 or 3 years, his pay goes way up...essentially, it's writing in an exit date for Bowden...I bet this is in most of these "coach-in-waiting" contracts...

I believe the pay (Fisher) increases considerably each and every year.... I didn't hear that sort of deal with Muschamp though. It just mentioned the 900k.

Cant you see Muschamp working on Brown's brake lines in about 4 years?!?!?!?! :the_finger:

Let Mark Richt's career go south a few years and see how long Muschamp remains HCIW.

Hasn't Jimbo Fisher been the "Coach in Waiting" at Free Shoes University for 4 or 5 years? It seems like he has had that title for a while. Its silly, because he could have had another head coaching job by now.

This is Jimbo's second season as "head coach in waiting"

This thread got me kinda intrested in Jimbo Fisher and what he does at FSU.

Looking at their coaching staff, they have one Head Coach, one Executive Associate Head Coach, one Associate Head Coach, one Assistant Head Coach, and a Head Coach in waiting. I wonder if the kids really know who is running the show.

Head coach in waiting is just dumb. It's like a vulcher circling their prey.
If I'm the current head coach and U introduces "the man in waiting" I'm keeping my eye on that cat. Especially if he's only been around a year or so like Mustache,Mustang oh whatever.

I can see the morning headlines " Damn, coach fell down a flight of stairs" oops.

I don't understand the Texas move at all! The others I can see but not this one and can't believe Mack signed off on it!

Brown signed off on it because it is meaningless. He is likely going to coach five or more years, depending on his success and it is questionable whether Muz will wait that long, if another more attractive offer comes along. What the HCIW designation does is give Muz a big raise and possibly discourage some programs from going after him, and if they did the big raise might deter some, as it would push up Muz's asking price to be HC.

Mack Brown signed off on it because it allows him to transition the program over to Will Muschamp including the handling of recruits.

It's been common knowledge among Longhorns alumni and fans that Mack is going to coach the next 2 seasons if not just next season and go out on top in Longhorns' fans minds before age 60.

Because if you stick around too long you are going to become a joke.

The age of guys coaching into their 60's,70's,and 80's is over.
